February at John Haley
February, 2023
Message from Ms. Bravo, Principal
We are kicking off February with daily Black History Celebrations and National Counselors Week! February is a month filled with kindness and positive energy. We are looking forward to a great month of learning.
At the beginning of this school year we set out to increase our attendance rate to be over 97%. It is with great sadness that I report that we are not meeting our goal. We continue to share with families that attendance and tardiness negatively impacts a scholar’s performance in class.
TIPS for Families
· Let your scholar(student) know that you think school is important.
· Set a regular bedtime and enforce it.
· Provide your scholar with plenty of time to get ready for school.
· Provide an alternate transportation plan for getting your scholar to school on time.
- Make sure your scholar arrives at school on time daily. Classes begin promptly at 7:45a.m. - Scholars should arrive at least ten minutes early.
· Plan medical, dental, and other appointments before and after school if possible. If appointments must be during the school day, plan them so that your scholar does not miss the same class every time.
· Request a meeting with the school’s Attendance Team or Counselor to discuss your scholar’s attendance concerns.
If your scholar should arrive late to school, please come in to the main office and sign them in. Always send your scholar with a note from your, doctor/dental/court excuse slip to let us know your scholar will be arriving after 7:45 a.m. or why they were absent. Our scholars would not be as successful as they are without your support.
As we are well into the 2022-2023 school year, testing season is upon us. Students will be taking their middle of the year assessments that will help guide instruction as we prepare for STAAR. In order to best serve our students, teachers and staff will be working together to pull small groups to provide target instruction for your child. You may hear your child say they got to work with a different teacher. I encourage you to ask them what they learned and help reinforce the importance of learning at home.
I encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher anytime you have concerns, questions, or are curious about what they are experiencing at school. I am super proud of the work that occurs between 7:45 AM and 3:15 PM, but also know what an impact it can have when all adults are “in the know” about how a child is doing. Thank you for being amazing parents who care about John Haley. We could not have a better school community!
Thank you for your continued support of our amazing school. As always, my door is open and I welcome you to email or call anytime that you have questions, comments, or concerns.
Take care and thanks again for your continued support!

National School Counseling Week! Feb.6-10
We are very proud of them and would like to use this week to recognize their positive impact on our school! Please join us in celebrating them!
LOST AND FOUND
- The lost and found is accumulating! Please have your child check for any missing items.
WINTER GEAR
- As the cold weather continues, we would like to stress the importance of students wearing the appropriate winter outerwear. Our goal is to have children go outside for recess whenever possible because outdoor play is not just FUN, it is also good for them. According to health experts, children who play outside are happier, healthy, and stronger.
Children should come to school and ride the bus wearing a jacket or sweater. Make sure all items are labeled.
If your child is in need of outerwear, please contact our School Counselors-Ms. Martinez or Ms. Akins.
Keep in Touch!
We will use SnapConnect, e-mail, text, voice calling messages and our social media pages. If you have change your email or phone number, please contact us to update your information.
If you have moved, please contact Ms. Lucio for a moving packet.
A Closer Look at Kindness
What is Kindness?
Kindness is the ability and willingness to express care and compassion for others. Kindness is a choice to use our time, talent, and resources to better the lives of others and the world through genuine acts of love, compassion, generosity, and service.
Why focus on Kindness?
- Kindness boosts positive emotions. Acts of kindness create neural pathways that enhance feelings of well-being and the natural flow of feel-good endorphins and neurotransmitters.
- Kindness is self-replicating. When we perform an act of kindness, it is likely to encourage others to act in a similar way.
- Kindness reduces stress and anxiety. Kindness promotes positive relationships with other people. Anything that helps you to build bonds with other people helps decrease anxiety.
