Hatherly Happenings

The Hatherly School continues to focus on learning to celebrate similarities and differences. This week we highlighted the words diversity and inclusion. Over the weeks we have concentrated on a wide array of visible and invisible traits. Our focus this week was differences in names.

The Name Jar was our story on Wednesday morning. The book is about a girl who has just moved to a new school. Having just moved from Korea, Unhei is anxious that American kids will like her. So instead of introducing herself on the first day of school, she tells the class that she will choose a name by the following week. Her new classmates are fascinated by this no-name girl and decide to help out by filling a glass jar with names for her to pick from. But while Unhei practices being a Suzy, Laura, or Amanda, one of her classmates comes to her neighborhood and discovers her real name and its special meaning. On the day of her name choosing, the name jar has mysteriously disappeared. Encouraged by her new friends, Unhei chooses her own Korean name and helps everyone pronounce it—Yoon-Hey.

Thank you to all of the grade five parents who took the time to fill out our recent survey. After receiving feedback, the Hatherly School will not be having a car parade in June. The good news is DESE has released new guidelines for gatherings that will benefit small schools like Hatherly.

Parents will be invited to a small fifth grade farewell celebration. The celebration will last approximately 30 minutes. Details of the celebrations will be sent out next week as we ensure that the current guidelines are in place for all plans. For your planning purposes, we wanted you to know the celebrations will take place on June 15 with a rain date of June 18th. Miss Otto's class will be celebrated at 9:15 a.m. Mrs. Fairbank's class will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Miss Pescatore's class will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Once the morning celebrations have ended and families have headed home, fun activities will be planned for the fifth grade students.

We are thrilled to be able to move to a model that includes our families in the celebration. We have been a team throughout your student's career at the Hatherly School and it would not have been the same without you.

Thank you to our amazing PTO for making all of the Hatherly School teachers and staff feel extra special all week during teacher appreciation week! On Monday, snacks were distributed across grade levels for all to enjoy throughout the day! On Tuesday, we kicked off our day with a yummy breakfast with coffee, donuts, bagels, and muffins! Winner Winner Wednesday! Our very generous PTO raffled off 14 gift cards during afternoon announcements! On Thursday, each staff member received a fleece vest with the Hatherly logo on it! These are so cool! Beautiful flowers filled teacher vases on Thursday and Friday to create lovely bouquets to take home! Friday we filled our bellies with world-famous MARIAS subs, drinks, and desserts. And to save the best for last, throughout the week all our students wrote thoughtful notes and thank you cards to the entire staff, making us all feel so loved! Thank you Hatherly families and our PTO for an incredible week!

Mrs. Arruda's class created menus for their very own restaurant; Sweet Sauce! Marin and Molly invited Mrs. Flaherty, Mrs. Piatelli, and Mrs. Ward to eat at their restaurant! The tacos and sushi were delicious! But the jelly bean cake put them over the edge! Vivian and Sara were very excited about their special visitors they jumped right in to help serve!

Kindergarten students read a Mother's Day story with Mrs Sturges. They then added additional pages to complete the book. Great work friends! These students also are holding their library books in the picture below!

These abstract paintings were created by pulling paint across paper using a small piece of mat board. Students considered color choice, shapes, overlapping and direction. Once the paint dried, students added simple patterns with oil pastel.

Fifth grade students did a wonderful job researching their assigned biome/ecosystem with their group. The students worked cooperatively and productively throughout the week. The students were responsible for presenting their research and teaching the class about their ecosystem. They did a wonderful job!!!

Nice weather is here and that means more time spent in the great outdoors! It also means that we need to be on the lookout for ticks! Ticks are tiny bugs most often found in shady, damp, brushy, wooded, or grassy areas, including your own backyard. Adult ticks can be out looking for a host any time temperatures are above freezing! Ticks cannot fly or jump, they attach to animals or people that come into direct contact with them. They are responsible for spreading a wide variety of illnesses, including Lyme disease so it is important to check for ticks after being outdoors and to promptly remove the tick if you have been bit! Luna challenges all Scituate Elementary students to donate cans of dog or cat food for The Scituate Animal Shelter from May 3rd to May 21st. Pet food will be collected in each homeroom. The Birkevaag family will match every can of pet food that is donated with the support of PetSmart. The school that collects the most cans will receive $100 for the student council from the Birkevaag family. Jenkins and Cushing have won in the past. Who will take the win this year? The MCAS will be starting next week for students in the building as well as remote students in grades 3-5.

The Hatherly School will be having a parent orientation night on May 24. An email with the important information has been sent out. On the morning of June 4, our future kindergarten students will be screened. Appointment letters will be sent out next week.
