From Mr. Backmeyer's Desk...
Happy Friday Mustangs!
During this season we look to serve others and help children! We have a wonderful networked group of community members working together for our children! If you are not aware of this group here is their website - http://www.cydbartholomew.org - and below you can read more about them and take a look at their December newsletter! We are blessed to have this group in our community!
Our Vision A community where all youth and families are reaching their full potential.
Our Mission The Council for Youth Development is a Bartholomew County network that identifies, coordinates, and aligns community efforts to ensure the development of the whole child.
CHALLENGE QUESTION How can we work together to ensure that every child is healthy, safe, educated, engaged, and supported throughout Bartholomew County?
BACKGROUND The Council for Youth Development (CYD) is comprised of motivated partners invested in supporting youth across all age groups. Leadership from BCSC, the Courts and Child Services, early learning educators, and out of school providers are among the active supporters. Other health and education partners such as Columbus Regional Health, the Bartholomew County Library System, post-secondary institutions, and industry are also essential for our success. All parties who share an interest in the success of our youth are encouraged to participate. CYD has worked closely with the Forum for Youth Investment throughout its history, and developed focus areas that support the development of the “whole child”. CYD has often supported community-wide efforts and professional development opportunities for those who serve youth. Likewise, there is great value in the ability to communicate across sectors and support advocacy efforts. These are vital components of CYD’s mission.
MOVING FORWARD The work of CYD over the course of the past years have brought specific “threads” to the forefront. We believe these threads touch all youth:
- Family Support looks different in the Pre-K years than it does for parents of Middle School students. It looks different for those whose first language is not English; different for those facing poverty or mental illness. The CYD network partners believe that the support of ALL Bartholomew County’s families elevates the hope for our children and community.
- Social-Emotional Health lies at the heart of happy children. Happy children are more engaged, have more learning success, and more employable. Social-Emotional Health speaks to a child’s connectedness, sense of responsibility, sense of hope. Social-Emotional Health is what employers are addressing when they speak of challenges with “soft skills”.
- Advocacy & Professional Development The challenges that face our families must remain top-of-mind for our community. In the same way that “welcoming” can be ever-changing, and look different for each individual, the efforts to support families evolve over time. The CYD’s role will remain as the convening body for those supportive efforts.

NEWS from BCSC Food Service
I am pleased to announce a new interactive menu service from BCSC Food Service. On the BCSC website under the parent tab; food service section, you may access our new menu system. This system allows for customer feed back about the meal item; has nutrition and allergen information; visuals of the menu items when available; and allows users to filter what allergens the student may have and then prints the menu showing safe food items to choose from.
HERE is the link - https://bcsck12.nutrislice.com/menus-eula
The new menu will be posted monthly but we will still follow a 5 week, seasonal cycle menu.
Please share this information as you wish and I hope this new system will be of benefit to our students and families of BCSC.

The MUSTANGS are on the MOVE! Grazing in the Rooms with Great Attendance!
It's time! The two mustangs who have been hanging out in the commons and office have begun to move!
The two classes with the highest attendance the previous week will get to host one of the mustangs for the week. If their class wins, the mustang will be delivered to their room on Monday morning after announcements. The class can keep the mustang in your room or right outside of your room to signify and celebrate your great attendance. The class will keep it until the following Monday when it will move again. We suspect the Mustangs will sometimes show up on Southside's Twitter or Facebook page.
We will begin talking about the Mustangs on the announcements on Monday mornings! See pictures from our 1st two classroom winners....Mr. Bodart's and Miss Kahlenbeck's classes!
THANK YOU to our Southside PTO for Offering the After-School Movie Opportunity!

Please, No Cell Phone Use When Car Line is Moving
Please, No Cell Phone Use When Car Line is Moving!
We need some of these signs in our car line. Distracted driving is dangerous, particularly in an area where many children congregate to get in and out of cars. Thank you for helping us to keep all of the children at Southside safe!
