Spruce and Wilmer-Hutchins Elementary Schools
A Message from our Executive Director: Tanya Shelton
Thank you for a successful first administration of STAAR. Many of you shared that our kids worked hard and did their best. What more could we ask for?
Our work is not done. We have about 19 days until the second administration of STAAR. Let's ensure a quick turnaround for our data meetings to focus on the HOT TEKS that need to be retaught. Leaders should review assessments in advance to find gaps in student work based on the lowest HOT TEKS. We will continue our relentless pursuit of excellence by living in classrooms, analyzing student work, tracking data, and reacting to the data to improve mastery of TEKS.
Practice like we've never won!
Perform like we've never lost!

Updates and Reminders
Principal Collaboration
The Spruce and Wilmer-Hutchins Principal Collaboration will take place on Thursday, April 18, 2019 from 11:00am – 4:00pm. We will meet at the new Highland Hills Library located at 6200 Bonnie View Road. We ask that Assistant Principals and Campus Instructional Coaches attend to be partners in the leadership moves we will make for the next few weeks leading up to the second administration of STAAR. Lunch will be provided. We look forward to seeing you there.
Friday Assessment Walks
Assessment walks will take place each Friday. During this time, we will look for evidence of teacher expectations on student work and effective monitoring during weekly assessments. Principals should be prepared to think about the feedback teachers should receive, leadership moves based on the feedback and follow-up in classrooms. Assessment walks will be unscheduled each Friday.
Student Supervision
This is the time during the school year when we begin to become burned out and sometimes more relaxed in the supervision of students. However, when we become too relaxed, the number of incident reports, bullying reports, discipline referrals, and parent complaints increase. Let’s remind students of expectations for their behavior in and out of classrooms. Please remind teachers to do the following:
1. Remind students of hallway expectations before stepping into the hallway.
2. Supervise recess by walking around and monitoring each day.
3. Don’t send several students unsupervised to the restroom.
4. Remind students of expectations for their behavior and voice level during lunch periods.
We will utilize the Game Day Look Fors as a lens to observe instruction and ensure that alignment and rigor are visible throughout our 3rd - 5th-grade classrooms. Follow-up visits will be unscheduled. Unscheduled visits will take about 45-minutes.
