Briarhill is hosting an ISS Downlink
We are BEYOND excited to announce that on February 14, 2018 Briarhill students will be virtually conferencing with the astronauts onboard the International Space Station. Briarhill is the only K-12 school in the state of Texas to be hosting a downlink this school year.
Questions for the Astronauts
Do you have a question that you want to ask an astronaut? If so, click here to submit a question. We will select 20 questions and the students who submitted the question will be the one to actually talks to the astronauts.
Deadline to submit questions will be January 26, 2018.
Student Ambassadors
Student Ambassadors will play a very important role the day of the downlink. These students will be the face of Briarhill. Each student ambassador will be assigned a VIP. They will be responsible for greeting and escorting our guest to and from the gym.
Ambassador applications may be picked up in the library starting Monday, December 18, 2017. Deadline for applying will be Friday, January 19, 2018. Just an FYI, one of the questions on the application will be what type of Beyond the Classroom activities did you participate in. Beyond the Classroom activities are listed below.
Beyond the Classroom
- STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) Club: STEM club is an opportunity for students to explore science, technology, engineering, and math through various experiments. STEM meets the first Wednesday of the month in room 310. See Mrs. Mickle for more information.
- Mission to Mars: Neil Armstrong was the first astronaut to walk on the moon. Will you be the first to travel to Mars? This club will challenge you to design the Mars Base Camp Habitation Module that will orbit Mars and provide a home away from home for astronauts during their mission. See Mrs. Green for more information.
- Two for the Crew: NASA has challenged students to use their creativity to combine two tools used by the crew aboard the ISS into one helpful tool. K-12 students in the United States will use their ingenuity to create a helpful tool that combines the functions of two objects being used by crew aboard the International Space Station. The tool will be 3D printed. See Mrs. Weesner for more information.
- Lunch & Learns Thursdays: A different ISS video will be shown every Thursday. The videos will open the student's eyes to what it is like to live and work on the International Space Station. 6th/8th graders Lunch & Learn will be in the library. 7th grade Lunch & Learn will be in room 306.
- Competition to Collaboration: Participating students will collaborate on a special project with a classroom from Moscow, Russia. The first meeting will be November 2. See Mrs. Weesner if you are interested in participating.
