Weekly Update September 23, 2022
Head Cheetah's Message
Families,
It was such a pleasure to welcome so many parents & guardians to our Open House events this week. We were very happy to see so many returning faces, along with many new families as well. We hope that your visit was informative and left you with positive feelings about how your students spend their days at Memorial School. It is hard to believe that yesterday was the first day of fall; and it certainly doesn’t seem possible that we’re entering our last week of September! The fall season took us by surprise when it announced its arrival with a thunderstorm during our morning drop offs. I hope that the recent rains will contribute to a season full of colorful foliage. Thank you all for contributing to such a smooth start. The 2022-23 school year is off to a great start!
Thank you for your partnership!
Joey & Andrea
Memorial Cheetahs in Action - Our students participated in Start With Hello Week
Start With Hello Week is a national call-to-action week dedicated to making new social connections and creating a sense of belonging among youth. Our students made a pledge to include others in their activities, be upstanders, practice being grateful for others, and simply say "hello" in an effort to make others feel welcome.
Positive Behavior during Dismissal and on the Bus was Rewarded with Extra Recess
Memorial Models
Memorial Models are chosen weekly by their teacher. These students have excelled all week in taking care of themselves, others, and things. The recipients will dine at a VIP table during lunch every Friday!

PAWsitive Office Referrals
A PAWsitive office referral is submitted when a staff member recognizes a student who is going above and beyond to exemplify one of our three school rules - taking care of others, taking care of self, & taking care of things.
Order of the Cheetah
Barnabas The Therapy Dog is coming to Memorial School!
The purpose of therapy pets is to provide attention and companionship to others. Our canine visitor’s name is Barnabas, and he is nine years old. Barnabas is an experienced therapy pet who received his certification for therapy and crisis response at the age of three. Over his six years of service, he has visited assisted living facilities, local public schools, the University of Connecticut, and The Institute of Living. Barnabas is a calm, well-trained Golden Retriever, who is at ease with all ages and group sizes. When he is not sharing his gentle spirit with others, he is happy to cuddle and play with his family. Barnabas will be joined by his handler, Coby, when he visits Memorial School.
Barnabas will be visiting us on Wednesdays, for approximately one hour. As we all acclimate to having him with us, we will begin having individuals and small groups of students join Barnabas in our Cheetah Den. In addition to his handler, students will always be supervised by a member of the Memorial School staff. Over time, we may begin to introduce classroom visits.
News From The Gym
Hi everybody,
We hope everyone had a fun and adventurous summer, and the start to the new school year has been a great one!
The children are doing great in PE class, working hard, trying their best, trying new things, and being kind and respectful classmates, it’s been a great start!
Here are some of the units and skills we will cover through Sept.:
All students: Exercises that promote balance, strength, power, speed, cardiovascular endurance, anaerobic fitness, flexibility, and agility.
Pre Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and Grade1:
Movement and motor skill patterns are stressed. Students are taught, through movement, to appreciate and enjoy the benefits of exercise, fitness, and skill development and acquisition.
We warm up each class to prepare for the class ahead with stretching and exercises, we do some running and aerobic fitness, and then move into the main part of the class and current unit.
We have done some work with jump ropes, hula hoops, soft objects/balls/foxtails/frisbees for throwing and catching and hand eye coordination, rehearsal, and development, stations with with various skill and fun activities, soccer lessons for skill work with our feet and a ball, both individually and with a partner.
We always promote, model, and encourage giving our best, personal effort, appreciating our fellow classmates and their abilities, and looking to grow personally and individually through movement and cooperation.
We see the Pre K classes twice a week for 40 total min., Kindergarten and Grade 1 classes twice a week for 90 total min.
Grade 2 and Grade 3:
Movement and skill development and mastery are what we strived for. Students are taught, through movement, to appreciate and enjoy the benefits of exercise, fitness, and skill development, individually, in small groups, and in a larger setting.
We warm up each class to prepare for the class ahead with stretching and exercises, we do our running and aerobic fitness, and then move into the main part of the class and current unit.
We work specifically to focus on push ups, sit ups (curl ups), the mile run/walk, and flexibility components, preparing our older students for the Grade 4, 6, 8, and 10 State Physical Fitness Testing Program.
We have been working on the mile run “club” and “running club”, while also recording times for our Grade 3 students, again in preparation for the State Physical Fitness Testing Program in grades 4, 6, 8, and 10.
We have done some work with jump ropes, hula hoops, soft objects/balls/foxtails/frisbees for throwing and catching and hand eye coordination rehearsal and development, stations with various skill and fun activities, soccer lessons for skill work with our feet and a ball, both individually, with a partner, and in small groups. The students can also participate in smaller skill stations/groups where they can challenge their skill acquisition to that point.
We always promote, model, and encourage giving our best, personal effort, appreciating our fellow classmates and their abilities, and looking to grow personally and individually through movement and cooperation. Leadership skills are also promoted and encouraged with many various opportunities.
We see the Grade 2 and Grade 3 classes twice a week for 90 total min.
We are very fortunate to see all the children as much as we do. Our school administration and district leadership really values the overall growth of each student, which is easily evidenced everywhere you look.
Thank you for working so hard to see that your child has their sneakers and a water bottle each day they have PE class, this has been going great!
As Oct. arrives, a sweatshirt might be a good idea on PE class days as well, remember, we can always take it off if we get too hot.
We are very excited to introduce into our curriculum a new unit, “real” disc golf! Through a generous grant from our PTO and support from our administration, we are ready to explore and enjoy the great family activity of disc golf! With many disc golf courses all around CT and NE, it is a really great way to have some family fun, be outdoors, do some light hiking in the woods, play a fun game that all family members can participate in, and be part of a new, expanding and popular lifetime activity that is growing all over! Look for our students to begin this unit in Oct., more info. to come on this exciting new activity at Memorial! Enjoy a couple fun pictures of some of our Grade 3 students “previewing” our new addition!
For any student that turned in their Summer Fitness Challenge Calendar/Log/Journal, great job! Our “extra gym time and freeze pop celebration” will be on the morning of Oct. 4th! Don’t worry about reminding your son/daughter, we will circulate a list of the children that turned in their fitness calendar/log/journal to their teachers/coaches so they know who to send!
Lastly, if anyone has any fitness equipment at home that they no longer use, please consider donating it to our “Fitness Lab”. We have about 20 pieces of various fitness equipment that the children love to use (if it is appropriate for their size/weight). It helps us reinforce our goal of keeping the children as active as possible as much as possible, in any way that they might enjoy. Just send Coach Ruel an email at the school (gruel@easthamptonct.org) and he will work out the delivery details with you! Thanks!
Thank you to those who were able to attend our school’s open house, it was nice to see and talk with you!
We hope you can find time regularly to enjoy the outdoors and time moving and exercising and playing as a family, your children will love it and value this time as a family!
Have a great start to fall season!
