4 Slim Poetry Reads for your Back Pocket this Summer
1. Wade In The Water
By Tracy K. Smith ($16, Penguin) The Pulitzer Prize winner and current US Poet Laureate’s latest poetry book is a time travel of American voices past and present. We move from extracts of historic letters by African Americans enlisted in the Civil War and their wives, through the worn mother being woken up by a hyper four-and-a-half-year-old in need of cereal. This is a thought-provoking and profound collection that will percolate in your brain and demand repeated readings – the sign of some truly powerful poetry.
2. Swimming Underwater
By Tatterhood (£12.99, The Whole Gang Press) “Matinee, replay, what did you achieve today? High five, kept us alive, living underwater.” Inspired to write by the strange, twilight existence of new parenthood, Bristol-based Joanna Bennett (like the luminous Hollie McNish) has mined the sleep-deprived, slightly terrifying moment when a woman finds herself in charge of keeping a small human alive. Moving, funny “I thought of going out tonight but I think I’ve lost my powers”, affirming and comforting, Bennett proves herself to be a home-grown talent to watch.
3. The House with Only an Attic and a Basement
By Kathryn Maris ($6.95, Allen Lane) US-born and London-based Kathryn Maris is the joyful, witty and slightly cynical voice you demand from your mates after a particularly bad break-up. How To Be A Dream Girl Not A Doormat About The “Ex” conjures up the famously scathing “cool girl” polemic from Gone Girl; Singles Cruise deftly pierces those singletons who can never commit (because they’ve decided to stay attached to someone who’s totally moved on), while classical characters Electra, Clytemnestra and Iphigenia all get witty and neurotic modern-day retakes.
4. Hera Lindsay Bird
By Hera Lindsay Bird ($13.41, Penguin) “It’s like… animal activists throwing red paint at deer to save time in the long run… It’s like a calculator for hippies where the only button is ‘infinity man’...” The best thing about New Zealander Hera Lindsay Bird is her ability to confound and delight in equal measure. Tackling love, hate, poetry and, of course, Friends (her famous viral poem contains the lines: “Monica Geller off popular sitcom F.R.I.E.N.D.S/ Is one of the worst characters in the history of television/ She makes me want to wash my eyes with hand sanitizer”) make for a delightful roller-coaster ride of verse.

What Should Your Teacher Book Club Read?
When people talk about teachers having summers off, most teachers laugh. You know that although summer gives you more unscheduled time to travel, rest, and spend time with family, you also use a big chunk of that time preparing for the next school year. That includes learning new methods, improving your tech skills, attending conferences and other professional development events, and lots and lots of reading.
But what should you read? And what are the best ways to get the reading done? Here are some great titles to consider, along with some advice for how to choose the one that’s right for you. If you’re doing this with a group, there are also have suggestions for making that work well here.
