Notes from Ms. Tinnin and the Creative Arts Team
Tips for taking care of our laptops (teachers and students):
Laptop cleanliness:
-Keep liquids away from the computer: Liquids can damage or short internal components, corrupt data and make keys stick or not function.
-Keep food away from the computer: Crumbs can damage the keys preventing them from depressing totally, damage circuitry and make the laptop look dirty.
-Have clean hands: Dirt and oils from fingers and wrists can eat away from the protective finish on the laptop, keyboard and trackpad.
LCD Monitor:
-Prevent damage to the monitor: Make sure there are no obstructions (paper clips, pens or pencils, etc.) on the keyboard when you are shutting the lid. Items like these can dent, scratch or even crack the screen.
-Close the lid properly: Close the lid gently and hold from the middle of the screen. Closing the lid using only one edge causes extra pressure on the hinges which over time will crack and break them.
-Hold the laptop by the base: Lifting and holding the laptop by the display creates unneeded pressure on the hinges. This action may direct pressure to the LCD and deform or crack the screen itself.
-Be aware of what you put on top of the laptop: Placing heavy items on the laptop (open or close) can cause serious damage to the LCD, hinges and chassis.
Power:
-Do not pull on the power cord: Pulling on the power cord can damage the cord, socket, and plug.
-Do not roll over the power cord with a chair: Rolling over the power cord with a chair can lead to a short and further damage to the power cord, power supply and laptop.
-Power Conservation: If not using your laptop for more than two hours, shut it down. The power consumption of the laptop within those two hours is far greater than that required to power on the laptop.
-Battery Maintenance: Leaving a laptop plugged in after the battery is fully charged will reduce the overall lifetime of the battery.
The laptops should be cleaned, “shut down” and placed back in the cart ready for the next class. Teachers should inspect each laptop before and after usage.
Make sure that the laptops have the correct time and date. Inaccurate date and time can cause problems with the computer's security software, malfunction, etc.
ALL EQUIPMENT SHOULD BE “TURN OFF” “SHUT DOWN” BEFORE LEAVING FOR THE HOLIDAYS.
TEACHERS, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR LAPTOP IN YOUR CAR. IT IS TOO COLD!!

Letter from Dr. Goldson
Dear Prince George’s County Public Schools Community,
This evening, I will unveil my operating budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2021 – centered on meeting the diverse needs of our students and families. The proposal includes free meals at community schools, mental health supports and revamping our workforce development program. The proposed budget invests $2.3 billion in five key areas: academic excellence, high-performing workforce, safe and supportive environments, family and community engagement and organizational effectiveness.
Our universal meals program at the 45 community schools will provide free breakfast, lunch and supper to approximately 31,360 students. Additionally, we will fund a new middle school language immersion program, enhance our Career and Technical Education program, and expand our mental health supports for both students and families. The plan will also meet our commitment to last year’s salary increases for educators, administrators and support staff, so we can continue to recruit and retain high-quality employees.
With the success of our schools, enrollment continues to rise. This year, nearly 4,000 more students entered our schoolhouse doors — a historic single-year high — continuing a seven-year growth trend. As more students join the PGCPS family, they all have the same dream of a quality education that nurtures their talents and propels their dreams into reality. These budget investments prioritize supporting students in and outside of the classroom in preparation for future success.
We encourage you to share your thoughts and feedback throughout the budget process, starting with the budget hearings next month. For updates, please visit the PGCPS website.
Thank you for your continued support as we build pride in Prince George’s County Public Schools by keeping students first.
Sincerely,
Dr. Monica GoldsonChief Executive Officer
