February 2024
It's February!
What a difficult week. I know that many families are hurting right now with several untimely events/situations impacting students in our local area. I appreciate your patience and support during this difficult time.
Everyone is invited to join us in wearing pink on Monday. We are joining with Barnardsville Elementary to host a 'Pink Out for Khloe' event. Khloe attended BES in Kindergarten and First Grade before moving to NBES for Second and Third Grades. I hope that your family was able to discuss this situation at home over the weekend. Remember that it is normal for our children (and us) to feel sad, confused, scared, or even mad. Some people need to talk about how they feel, and others need to go on with their regular schedules and activities. We need to respect each other and support each other – recognizing that not everyone will need the same thing. We will have counselors available at school on Monday just like we did on Friday. I will share any arrangements as soon as I receive them. Thank you for lifting up this family during their time of need.
February is traditionally thought of as the month of LOVE. I encourage you to give extra hugs to your children this month. Call your loved ones and invest time in relationships. Take advantage of each moment to share love with others.
I hope February is an easier month and I look forward to growing, learning and succeeding here at NBES!

Students are encouraged to dress up as a book character. All students will participate in our Book Character parade. We ask that students have a copy of the book to carry in the parade. Your child's classroom teacher can help with this if needed. You could also have your child draw the cover of the book.
Please no scary/Halloween costumes and no accessories that look like weapons.

News from NBES PTO!
It is time to start planning for Spring. We have a HUGE need for volunteers to commit to helping with our Spring Carnival this year. Traditionally NBES has hosted an amazing Fall Festival but due to circumstances beyond their control for our PTO group, they were unable to host that event in the fall. Our students and the community look forward to this type of event but we need your help! As you know, it takes the efforts of our whole community to put on and enjoy our carnival, and in order to make sure we can mount this event in the spring we need to know now if we can count on you to volunteer and what your commitment level would be. See below for more information.
We have set 4/19 as our event date, with 4/26 as the back up rain date.
All community members are welcome to help—parents, grandparents, high schoolers needing volunteer hours logged—there is something for everyone to do on 4/19 and the week before.
Please visit the link below to show your interest level.
This RSVP form helps us assess how many shifts can be covered or what help you are able to
provide. We will use the RSVPs to determine our capacity to host a Spring Carnival this year.

NBES LOVES VOLUNTEERS!
NBES welcomes volunteers! There are many ways for individuals to volunteer at our school. All volunteers must fill out an online volunteer application and be on the approved volunteer list before volunteering. Potential volunteers may go ahead and start on this process by following the link below. Thank you in advance for your support!
Level 1 Volunteers - General volunteer - never supervising students.
Level 2 Volunteers - Volunteer who supervises/gives directions to students or serves in a leadership role (such as PTO board). This level requires a background check (conducted by Buncombe County Schools).

To attend a field trip, volunteers must have Level 2 status!

Visitor Procedures
ALL parents and visitors to campus must sign in at the office and obtain a visitor sticker (or a volunteer pass if applicable). Please note that you must sign in even if you are only visiting the cafeteria. Your cooperation in helping us to follow Central Office policy and ensuring the safety of all children is expected and appreciated.
If you have an appointment or scheduled time to be at school in the morning, and wish to walk in with your child, please still plan to follow the established procedure of coming to the office, signing the visitor registry, and obtaining a visitor tag.
Visitors will only be allowed to visit a classroom (during instructional time) if the visitor has scheduled the visit with the teacher beforehand or if the visitor is a scheduled volunteer.
Visitors during Lunch
Parents are invited to eat with their child in the cafeteria; however, as a courtesy to other students, we ask that you do not bring outside food such as fast food and/or sodas into the school cafeteria. Parents should arrive at school in time to get a visitor’s pass and report to the lunchroom hallway five minutes before the scheduled lunch time. Please always let the teacher know ahead of time if you plan to eat with your child.
The daily lunch menu will be read during morning announcements. Occasionally there will be a menu change due to late deliveries or snow days. You can find links to BCS menus here: https://www.buncombeschools.org/page/menus-and-pricing
Should you desire to bring in a special snack for your child’s birthday or another event, please coordinate this with your child’s teacher so as not to conflict with our lunchroom policies. In addition, any food brought into the school to be shared with students must be store bought with ingredients listed. Please allow school staff to distribute snacks due to their knowledge and understanding of students’ allergies and dietary needs. Our school also encourages healthy snacks and choices.
