Hello Raider Families,

The purpose of this communication is to provide parents and guardians with enhanced safety information related to Crews Lake Middle School’s start to the 2020-21 school year. The information contained in this section primarily concerns policies and procedures for the Traditional setting and should be reviewed thoroughly by parents of students starting the school year in the traditional setting. However, the information is relevant to all families to understand the additional layers of safety precautions that will be in place as members of our school community.

As you all are aware, the situation with COVID-19 pandemic may change. We will keep parents informed using our parent newsletter (Raider Report), web and Facebook pages, as well as the school messenger system, to alert you of any critical changes.

Families and students are expected to screen children for signs of illness every morning before sending children to school.

Families must be looking for symptoms including:

Fever (greater than 100.4º), sore throat, new uncontrolled cough, that causes difficulty breathing (for students with chronic allergic/ asthmatic cough, a change in their cough from baseline); diarrhea, vomiting or abdominal pain; and new onset of severe headache, especially with a fever. Other symptoms listed by the CDC include chills, fatigue/muscle or body ache, new loss of taste or smell, and congestion or runny nose.

OR

Within the past two weeks, has the student had prolonged AND close contact (closer than 6 feet for more than 15 minutes) with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 and is still under a required isolation by the Pasco County Department of Health?

OR

Has the student recently tested positive for COVID-19?

Beginning next week the front office will remained locked during the day. We are asking all visitors to schedule an appointment. Once you arrive at the front office there will be a Ring doorbell camera to allow admittance.

If your child becomes ill while at school, parents and caregivers will need to have a reliable plan for timely pick up.

It is vitally important this year to have working phone numbers and emails in each student’s myStudent records, including any approved persons who you authorize as part of your plan to pick up students in the event that they become sick at school.

This information must be provided during the online registration process when you update emergency contact information.

If a student becomes sick at school and the student is displaying symptoms that could be associated with COVID-19, the student will be removed to a specific isolation room to await parent pick up. The parent will be provided with specific information from the school nurse and clinic assistant regarding the timeline for school reentry.

In most cases, it will be 10 days from the start of symptoms and not before 24 hours after the fever has resolved. If the family obtains a negative COVID test or has a doctor providing an alternative diagnosis, then the student may reenter sooner. All of these health related concerns will be managed through the school nurse.

If a member of the school community, student or staff, tests positive for COVID-19 it is vitally important that this information be shared with the school nurse or administration immediately. Student/staff names will be kept confidential from the public and general staff.

All members of our school community will be notified that someone was positive for COVID-19.

Once we receive this information we will begin the process of contact tracing within the school. We will need to determine any individual who had "close contact," fewer than 6 feet for 15 or more minutes. This may be individuals in the classroom, cafeteria, sports team, etc. We have developed enhanced safety processes like seating charts and rosters to keep track of your children at all times.

The Department of Health with advise our school as to the actions to take in the event that we have positive cases. It is possible that all school community members with "close contact" could have a 14 day quarantine.

As a reminder the School Board approved a final version mask order on 7/28/2020. The order specifically addresses what constitutes a face covering for both students and teachers as well as guidelines for use. This order is designed to address the health and safety of all members of our campus community.

You may want to acclimate your child to wearing a mask in the home environment before the start of school. Wearing a mask can be challenging for long periods of time and does take some getting used to.

All staff, parents, visitors and students are expected to wear face covering on campus and/or attending school sponsored events. Athletes are encouraged but not required to wear face covering during practice or play.

• The face covering should be put on upon arrival at any school or District building before exiting your vehicle in the parking lot. Face coverings must be worn on the bus.
• The face covering must remain in place while inside all buildings, including as you walk into the school or district building, when working in or walking through common areas such as hallways, stairways, and elevators, and whenever you are in any room, including classrooms, or enclosed area where people are present.
• Face covering may be removed outdoors where social distances of 6 feet is possible, when in a room alone with the door closed, and at the end of the day after exiting the building. Those students taking a bus must keep the mask in place until they have exited the bus.
• Since eating and drinking with a face covering in place is not possible, it can be removed during meal or snack times. Social distancing of at least 6 feet is still recommended during these times.
• Schools will create “mask break” opportunities for students where appropriate.

Additionally, the order outline steps taken if students engage in any of the following behaviors:

• Refusing to follow social distancing guidelines
• Refusing to wear a face covering or wearing it improperly
• Interfering with another person's ability to wear a face covering
• Failing to keep the face covering on one's person by putting it on tables, desks, etc.
• Sharing face coverings
• Intentionally engaging in behaviors that could spread COVID-19
• Spitting on campus

• Sharing writing utensils, eating utensils, drinks, snacks, or food in such a way that could lead to an increased risk of exposure to COVID-19.

• Engaging in displays of affection such as hugging, kissing, and otherwise being in close proximity that is not consistent with social distancing
• Being present on campus with symptoms such as an elevated temperature, fever, coughing, sneezing, or flu-like symptoms

Students engaged in any of these behaviors will receive with following actions:

• At least one, but no more than three, verbal warnings or reminders to the student by staff
• After the above warnings or reminders have been provided, then there must be an in-person, telephonic, or virtual conference with both the student and the parent/guardian(s) simultaneously
• During the conference with the student and parent/guardian(s), there will be a required viewing of a CDC video as well as review of the CDC guidance
• During the conference, the parent/guardian(s) will be notified that continued noncompliance with the emergency rule may result in the student being removed from the brick and mortar school, and being educated utilizing one of the virtual or distance learning opportunities made available by the School Board
