Shining Bright @ Madonna!
MCS News - Sunday, January 14, 2024
Today is the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time - and ordinary doesn't mean insignificant! It is a time we discover the extraordinary ways our Faith and our God gives meaning and purpose to our every day lives. The priests vestments during this time are green to simbalize hope, and this time of growth continues until the beginning of Lent, Ash Wednesday.
In today's reading, we are reminded that God calls us first. In other words, he's made the first move. We can choose whether to answer the call and follow His teachings, or turn a closed hear to his voice.
We proudly celebrate all of the children who answer the call every day! These children are servant leaders, and role models for Saint-like choices. Examples of children answering God's call include:
- helping to put away Christmas decorations
- being present with our littlest PreK learners
- cleaning up messes in classrooms
- holding doors open for peers
- say Hi to visitors to Madonna
Way to GLOW Madonna!!
Every time a GOTCHA is shared with a student, their choice to say, "Yes!" to God is celebrated and recognized....and there are SO many GOTCHAs already collected in the baskets! These children answer God's call and they GO LIGHT OUR WORLD!
Each and every day, you choose to Glow, Madonna! Thank you for being Faith Leaders and answering God's call!!
I GLOW when I help a younger learner with his jacket!
We GLOW when we stop for prayer without being asked!
I GLOW when I participate in Prayer Club!

Adoration
This upcoming week, students will experience Eucharistic Adoration. Adoration is a very powerful and ancient form of prayer. The root of the word is "adore". Essentially, Adoration is an opportunity for us to show our deep love for Jesus. What sets Adoration apart from other forms of prayer is that Jesus is present with us in the consecrated host. We will be able to pray with Jesus before us, who is truly present in the Eucharist. Following our Mass in the gym, we will place a consecrated host, the Body of Christ, inside the beautiful gold Monstrance. All classes will take some time to be with Jesus in the Chapel to pray.

Outdoor Play is an Extension of our Classrooms!
At Madonna Catholic School outdoor play is vital for optimal learning. It provides children with fresh air, and the quality time outside connects them to the land, to nature, grounding many children. As well, it develops their physical, cognitive, emotional and social skills while celebrating and discovering the wonders, order and harmony of nature!
The are MANY benefits to Winter Outdoor Play!
Kids who play outside every day are healthier, happier, and stronger. Winter outdoor play builds kids’ brains and bodies and provides mental and emotional stimulation for better overall health.
Physical Exercise!
- Changes in weather give your child a chance to experience different environments and practice different physical skills.
- Research shows that kids who play outdoors and spend more time being active outside generally have better overall health. Research also indicates that as the immune system adapts to colder weather, it gets better at fighting infections.
- Just as different materials stimulate artists to create different types of art, the materials found outdoors in winter stimulate different types of imaginative play!
- Free play outdoors encourages positive social interactions, problem solving, relationship building, friendship skills, mentorship, teamwork, grit and resilience.
- Math and Language skills get developed during outdoor play, as does spatial awareness, patterning, construction, building with a variety of materials...and so much more!

Introducing Polar Bear Recesses!
We have found that when colder weather persists and students are inside for several days, their ability to focus and complete academic work suffers. Recess is a very important time for students as it allows for play, social-emotional regulation, fresh air, and exercise.
This year we are opening an Optional Polar Bear Recess! When temperatures are between -25 and -30 degrees Celsius or Windchill we will provide the option for students to head outside and play for a reduced amount of time at lunch recess. Students choosing to opt out of Polar Bear Recess will continue to enjoy supervised activities indoors.
Mme Gravelle & Mrs. Bennett will head outside with our "Polar Bears" and play in the fresh air with students interested in the joining this outdoor play!
Having this Polar Bear Recess option will help raise resilient kids and support the importance of outdoor fresh air play!
We will launch Polar Bear Recess this way for this year, reflect on its success and adapt appropriately for next year. Our EICS AP 134 provides guidelines for us at Madonna Catholic School for responding to our Canadian winter months and the flexibility to support healthy learners.
Friendly Reminder: Pick Up & Drop Off Locations
When buses aren't running, thank you for continuing to walk your child to their entry doors and meeting them at the same door at the end of the day.
Grade 4 Bottle Drive - Postponed
With the recent drop in temperatures and the cold weather conditions, we regret to inform you that our scheduled bottle drive has been postponed. Please stay tuned for our future bottle drive date. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding!
Special THANK YOU to our families who value attendance & arriving on time!
