2022-2023 Wisconsin Forward Exam Results
The Forward Exam was administered during the spring of 2023 in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics for students in grades 3-8, science for grades 4 and 8, and social studies for grades 4, 8, and 10. As part of the Wisconsin Student Assessment System, the Forward Exam is a large-scale, standardized achievement test designed to assess what students know in relation to the Wisconsin Academic Standards.
Your child’s Individual Student Report (ISR) will be sent home the week of August 14th. The ISR provides information about your child’s performance on the Wisconsin Forward Exam.
Remember that the ISR is just one of many indicators of your child’s academic performance. In order to obtain a more complete picture of your child’s areas of strength and growth, it is important to consider information from a variety of sources.
For more information on ISRs, please review the “What is an Individual Student Report” document linked below. Please also feel free to contact your child’s teacher or me with any questions.

Cultural Connections Updates
7 Grandfather Teachings
The traditional concepts of respect and sharing that form the foundation of the Native American way of life are built around the seven natural laws, or sacred teachings. Each teaching honors one of the basic virtues intrinsic to a full and healthy life.
Each law is embodied by an animal to underscore the point that all actions and decisions made by man are manifest on a physical plain. The animal world taught man how to live close to the earth, and the connection that has been established between the animal world and that of man has instilled a respect for all life in those who follow the traditional way.
- The Eagle teaches us LOVE. Love must be unconditional.
- The Buffalo teaches us RESPECT. Respect is the condition of being honored.
- The Bear teaches us COURAGE. Courage is the ability to face danger, fear, or changes with confidence and bravery.
- The Butterfly teaches us HONESTY.
- The Beaver teaches us WISDOM. Wisdom is the ability to make decisions based on personal knowledge and experience.
- The Wolf teaches us HUMILITY. Humility is being humble and not arrogant.
- The Turtle teaches us TRUTH. Truth is to know and understand all the seven teachings have given to us by the Creator and to remain faithful to them.

Highlights from N.A.I.G. Athletes (North American Indigenous Games)
LDF Tribal Members & Descendants competed in various sports as part of Team Wisconsin at the North American Indigenous Games recently held July 15-23 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The North American Indigenous games are a gathering of between 756 Indigenous tribes throughout US and Canada who come together to compete against each other in 16 different sports with 3 traditional indigenous sports. The following students were selected for Team Wisconsin to compete in each of the following sports:

- Wrestling- Leonard Chosa, Landon Saglin, Justin Funmaker, Esaube Brown, & Jerome Labarge. A few quotes below from the athletes themselves & parents:
"Ethan Gonzalez (Track & Field) from Mom... he participated in 5 track events, 4 of which he placed in. Ethan received 2nd in the 200 meter, 2nd in 300 meter, 2nd in the 4x100 meter relay and 3rd in the 4x400 meter relay. He is honored to have this experience and be able to represent the Lac Du Flambeau Tribe in a good way."
"Jerome LaBarge, (Wrestling) from Mom...the boys ALL did an amazing job, and brought home by the entire wrestling team the award for Team Wisconsin"!
"Summer Smith, (Track & Field-) noted herself...that this was the greatest experience of her life. She loved everything about it. She was so grateful that she was given this opportunity. She will never forget it and thanks the tribe for making it possible.
Team Wisconsin brought home overall 56 awards and were involved in 9 sports out of 15 sporting categories. Again, information was gathered from community members and we apologize for any oversights. More pictures are on the LDF School Website and FB.
