Fine Arts at RHHS!
RHHS has many wonderful programs, and this week I wanted to recognize our Fine Arts programs.
Chorus-
RHHS had three students, Lexi Schieler, Mercy Mondt, and Nikita Rodriguez, selected to the National Honor Choir. Congratulations, ladies! We had 28 students audition for State Chorus - the most ever! Chorus is planning a holiday dinner theater for December 15th - watch for additional information on this. Two chorus students, Mercy Mondt and Jessica Mikrut, were nominated for Governor's Honors. Finally, the school musical this year is Beauty and the Beast. Auditions are taking place this week.
Visual arts -
Congratulations to Cam Mulkey for have his artwork featured on the cover of the 2017-18 Bryan County Schools system calendar. Student artwork is now being displayed in several areas of our school, and we are working on a display for our front office. We have some very talented students! Our Visual Arts program now includes three art teachers, as we welcomed Mr. Matt King this year. We also were able to increase our course offerings this year to include Ceramics 3 and Ceramics 4. We are planning our largest school Art Show ever this spring.
Band-
Our Marching Wildcats had an excellent seasons, earning all superior ratings in every caption at our three marching competitions, and placing in very tough contests throughout the state. Nine students were selected to participate in Winterfest Honor Band at Armstrong State University. This is an all state quality band with members selected from all over Georgia and surrounding states. We also have our winter concert coming up on December 14th and will feature the band, a brass and woodwind ensembles, a percussion ensemble, the orchestra, and the Wildcat Winds from RHMS as our special guests!
Drama-
Mr. Morin and our drama students will be presenting "A Fairy Tale Christmas Carol" on Friday, 12/1 and Saturday, 12/2 - both nights at 7pm - at RHES. Tickets will be $5/person.
It is so wonderful to have such a strong fine arts program, and I am thankful for having such energetic teachers who promote fine arts.
Schedules - second semester
As we begin looking forward to next semester, our counselors and advisors are reviewing schedules to ensure students are placed correctly. Once any necessary changes have been made, students will receive a copy of their schedule in advisement on Friday, 12/15/17. Students will have until Tuesday, 12/19/2017 to note any requests for corrections on their schedules, and submit back to their advisor. Please note that requests for teacher changes will not be honored. In addition, any requests to change introductory level electives will not likely be possible due to most of these classes being full. Counselors will correct any additional errors by the first day of second semesterl, and students will be provided with an updated copy of their schedule.
Winter sports season begins...
Men’s and Women’s Basketball
Coach Bill Henderson and Coach Sarah Jones are looking to build off a season that saw both teams make the state playoffs in the 2016-2017 season. Both teams return great leaders, as well as a handful of newcomers.
Wrestling
Taylor Wilson, our returning state champion, and a team full of wrestlers who missed a state championship by just a few points, the Wildcat Wrestling team looks to continue building on a program best 2016-2017 season. Coach Bob Parker and Coach Bill Evans have worked tirelessly this off season to continue to develop these wrestlers and grow this program.
RH Swimming
Last year was the first, in school history, for the RH Swim Team. Coach Kristin Blanton and staff have the new program excelling. Look for both men's and women's swim teams to make some noise this year at the state competitions.
You can find schedules for all of these sports on our website. On the home page click Menu - Extracurricular - Athletics and follow the link for the particular sport.

Instilling an Attitude of Gratitude
With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it’s a great time to focus on gratitude in your family. While parents and guardians in Richmond Hill might have varying approaches to parenting, it is safe to say that most parents or guardians have a shared goal, to raise responsible and generous children who appreciate what they have, understand that self-worth and material possession are not synonymous, and show empathy for others. We all know that sometimes kids and adults feel entitled to what they have rather than grateful. This article serves as a tool for instilling gratitude among Richmond Hill youth and as a gentle reminder to practice gratitude, not only in the days leading up to Thanksgiving, but also as a daily ritual.
Unfortunately, overindulgent parenting can lead to a sense of entitlement and a lack of gratitude. Three ways parents overindulge their child are:
Giving too much - time, money, material possessions
Over-caring - doing things for them that the children could and should be doing themselves
Lax discipline - not holding the children accountable for their behaviors
Now, this article isn’t here to criticize your parenting, but rather it aims at helping you raise grateful and responsible young people. Here are some tips to help build gratitude in your family:
Recognize your own needs and get them met directly, not through your children.
Be aware of the kind of role model you are for your children, in terms of feeling gratitude for what you have, having a charitable spirit, and meeting your obligations.
Know what your values are about giving and receiving.
Teach your children the concept of “enough.”
Be aware of your parenting style.
Do not do for your children what they can clearly do for themselves.
Hold your children accountable for their behavior.
As your children mature and you give them increased privileges and freedoms. Be sure to pair those with increased responsibilities.
Listen to your children’s wants and teach them to distinguish between wants and needs.
Help your children to become educated and critical consumers of the media.
Give your children the opportunity to contribute to the family through regular chores.
Spend time with your children more often than you spend money on them.
Encourage your children to engage in activities that they enjoy in which they can gain a sense of accomplishment.
Give your children opportunities and encourage them to give their time or money to charity.
Best wishes for a wonderful Thanksgiving!
