Caldwell School District Update
From Superintendent Dr. N. Shalene French
July 13, 2023
Message from the Superintendent
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we prepare for the 2023-2024 school year, we are reflecting on "What is the Profile of a Caldwell Graduate?"
- What are the hopes, dreams, and aspirations that our community has for every student?
- What are the skills and mindsets that students need to thrive in our ever-changing world?
- What are the implications for learning and equitable structures and practices in our District?
Reflecting upon the profile of a Caldwell Graduate, it is essential that our Graduates are responsible citizens, effective communicators, creative problem solvers, respectful collaborators, and they are digitally literate. The foundation of these competencies begins in preschool and kindergarten and they are fostered and enhanced through elementary, middle, and high school.
Why are these competencies important? Because we want our youth to thrive in an ever-changing world. "We know that digital and AI [Artificial Intelligence] technologies are transforming the world of work and that [our students] will need to learn new skills and learn to continually adapt ..." (McKinsey Global Institute). Our students will need to be confident, life-long learners.
In contemplating the future, we can remind ourselves that:
- Uncertainty is managed by understanding
- Complexity is managed by courage
- Ambiguity is managed by agility
We are looking forward to the 2023-2024 school year. We are very grateful for the opportunity to prepare the children and youth of Caldwell to be future-ready.

Spotlight on Caldwell High School Fabrication Team
The Caldwell High School Fabrication Team placed 10th overall at the National SkillsUSA Competition last month. Gold medal teams from each state are invited to compete at nationals every year.
In 2022, Stone Stills, Gage Schleicher, and Wyatt Felton finished 18th. This year (2023) they improved by nearly 10 places. All three of these students have graduated and are moving on to pursue their post-secondary goals. Following in the footsteps of these outstanding welders are many talented students who have been challenging themselves, refining their skills, and who are excited to work towards the fabrication competitions in the spring of 2024.
"Attending these contests and competing against other high school students from around the United States motivates our next group of welders coming up and gives them a goal to work towards all year long," said Mr. Ivak Cooper, Welding Instructor at Caldwell High School.
Congratulations Stone, Gage, and Wyatt. We can't wait to see what you accomplish in the years to come. Way to represent Caldwell!
Migrant Summer School
This summer 170 students in grades Pre-K through 6th have been participating in our Migrant Summer School Program. During the month of July, students are focused on teamwork, leadership, literacy skills, and critical thinking.
Students have the opportunity to participate in STEM activities, experiential learning activities, and guided language acquisition instruction.
The goal of our Migrant Education Program is to ensure that all migrant students receive enriching and appropriate educational opportunities to meet the same challenging State academic content and academic achievement standards required of all Idaho children.
In addition, the Migrant Education Program provides a bridge to overcome educational disruption, cultural and language barriers, social isolation, various health-related problems, and other factors that may inhibit the ability of children to do well in school. Children, youth, and their families are offered supportive services throughout the year to ensure that our migrant students can fully participate in their learning.
