Nike Scout News September 2023

Nike Families,

I hope this newsletter finds you well. Learning is in full swing at Nike Elementary and it is awesome to see our students back in the building. The school is buzzing with energy and excitement as we head into September. I want to personally thank you for all that you have done to prepare your children for a successful year. I have really enjoyed getting to know the students as they get off the bus in the mornings, popping into classrooms to say hello, and during lunches.

I will be sending out monthly newsletters to communicate important information and upcoming events. We will also be sending out weekly emails with Thursday folder information.

We have a few important upcoming events.

If parents are needing additional KidAccount cards, they can be purchased for $1.00. Please contact the office if you are needing more or replacement cards.

We are excited to announce that Nike Elementary School will be doing the Bobo's Fundraiser this year. Last year we raised over $5,900 to help provide transportation for field trips, interactive classroom supplies, and many more items. The fundraiser will run from Sept. 2nd- 16th. Forms will be sent home this coming Thursday, September 1st in Thursday folders.

My name is Shanna Raeker and I am the school counselor at Nike. During the school year, I will provide bi-monthly counseling lessons on a variety of topics to all classrooms. Additionally, I provide brief individual counseling and small group counseling to students who need extra support. I can also help link families to community resources. Welcome Back! I hope you all enjoyed your summer break, I know I did!

Getting back into the routine of school can be difficult on little ones, especially when it comes to potty time, so we see more bathroom accidents at this time during the year. If you haven't already done so, I ask that all Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st grade students send in a change of clothes to be kept in thier backpack. Please place clothing in a large ziplock bag labeled with your child's name. If you have an older child who is prone to accidents, please send clothing in for them as well. While I do keep some clothing in my office my supply is limited!

Immunization Deadline is October 1, 2023. Students need proof of immunizations or exemptions turned in to Nurse's Office.

My name is Roxanda Fenelon and I am your music teacher. This is my twentieth year in the district. I have my Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Missouri State and two Master’s Degrees, one in Education from Southwest Baptist University and the other in Music from UMSL. I am excited about creating music again with the students and performing it in front of an audience. We have an online textbook called Quaver Music that is accessible any time through the students' Clever accounts. Hello! My name is Caryn Patterson and I am the art teacher at Nike. This is my 25th year as an art teacher! I have my Bachelor’s Degree from Maryville University and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Missouri Baptist University. I am currently working on my Master of Arts at Fontbonne University. Teaching art means I get to help my students grow creatively. I love to see what they create!

We will have an art show this fall at First State Community Bank in Pacific.

Library News

Classes have started to do their first book checkouts of the year! Kindergarten will do their first checkout very soon. Fourth grade - second grade students can keep their books for two weeks, so I really encourage them to finish the book. Kindergarten and first grade have their books for one week.

In third and fourth grade, we have been looking at different types of books. We are having an optional 10 book challenge to encourage them to read different genres.

The fall book fair will be October 9th - October 13th! We will be having a different company, called Literati, that will be doing the book fair. This company also has a monthly book club that you can enroll your child into to receive books. Lots more information will be coming home about the book fair and the book club.

I'm excited to get the year rolling and start teacher your student the skills and foundation to living a healthy/active lifestyle. To begin the year I like to cover basic skills such as throwing, kicking, and hand-eye coordination with the Pre-k, Kindergarten, and 1st grades. For the older grades, we start off with soccer, and then lead in to football; which is mainly focused around throwing and catching.

Please remember to wear TENNIS SHOES on your PE day. In fact, wearing tennis shoes every day will keep you safe out on the playground for recess.

3rd & 4th grade parents, your child is eligible for intramural sports. Forms were sent home in Thursday folders regarding our first intermural which will be soccer.

I am Lisa Hollstein, the Title 1 Reading Specialist for Nike Elementary. I provide one on one instruction and small groups, building foundational skills in reading for tier 2 and tier 3 instruction. This will be my 8th year teaching and my 6th year at Nike Elementary. We focus on building skills in the components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, building sight word knowledge, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Above you will find some helpful information about the first component of reading, which is phonological awareness. I will be out on maternity leave starting September 6th through December 7th. Exciting things are happening with PTO. Mark your calendars, we have our 3rd Annual Family Movie Night on Sept 15th. Doors open at 5:30 and the movie will start at 6:00. PTO will have free popcorn and have candy and water for sale. Bring your blankets and we'll see you at the Nike Gym.

Looking ahead for our Sept meeting on Sept 12th at 6:30 in the Nike Library, we will be discussion key positions for the upcoming year. We truly work together as a team! We will also start our planning our future fundraisers. Please consider helping with this event or getting your friends together for a night of fun!

PTO T-shirt orders are due September 22nd. Half sheet order forms were sent home in your child's Thursday folder last week. If you need a new order form, contact the office.

The cost of breakfast is $2.10 per day; lunch is $3.30 per day. Students may purchase extra milk for $.75 per carton.
