This Week at Royal
April 12 - 18
Happy Sunday, Falcons!
The past year has been full of obstacles, but our Falcon students, staff, and community have worked hard to achieve success. Today's newsletter theme is "Perseverance". Keep working hard, Falcons!
A few quotes about perseverance to ponder this week:
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.”
– Winston Churchill
“A bend in the road is not the end of the road… unless you fail to make the turn.”
– Helen Keller
“The only guarantee for failure is to stop trying.”
– John C. Maxwell
Have a great week!

Honoring Our Falcon Paras: Ruth Willis
Royal Junior High ELA Paraprofessional Ruth Willis at RJH exemplifies all that Royal is... compassionate, kind, generous, and flexible, she rolls up her sleeves and "gets it done", no matter the task. Along with our students, I have learned so much from her. I think it was last year that she realized how much of a blessing she is to our students. An 8th grader wrote "An Ode to Ms. Willis", and it was about how when she walks in the room, he knows that he is going to be ok, that he will get his work done, that he will not falter, because she will not let him... I think he wrote his ode for all of us. Everyone should have a Ms. Willis in their life.
Ms. Willis has been my aide for the past several years. I couldn't do it without her.

Royal ROTC Cadet is Sworn into the U.S Marine Corps
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is with honor and enthusiasm that I present to you our new U.S. Marine Corps poolee (an individual who has already signed up to become a Marine but has not yet left for boot camp) who was sworn in to enlist in the Marine Corps.
Cadet Gunnery Sergeant Napps has worked extremely hard on his math and English entrance exams to achieve an overall score of 56. His previous score was a 22 (unqualified). His new score qualifies him for numerous job fields.
GySgt McGill consistently worked with this young man and I was the ever intense 1stSgt in his ear to study, study, and study.
Please reach out and personally congratulate him. His intent is to ship to boot camp immediately after graduation!!!
Many of you have history with Cadet Napps and have watched him grow and bloom into the young man he is.

Royal Employees Attend Child Abuse Awareness Event
Royal employees Christi Ginn and Diane Holub joined Superintendent Rick Kershner attended the Waller County Commissioners’ Court as the Court approved two Proclamations recognizing April as Domestic Abuse Awareness Month in addition to Child Abuse Awareness Month. Also in attendance were local leaders and representatives from the Waller County Child Welfare Board, CASA Child Advocates, Focusing Families, Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and Katy Christian Ministries (with Katy Mayor Bill Hastings).
Afterwards, attendees joined together on the front steps of the Courthouse for a balloon pop (NOT release) and took a picture in front of the pinwheels and WCCWB Banner. The 125 pinwheels each represents a child who is a victim of child abuse and neglect. Last year, 55 confirmed victims in Waller County & 70 Waller County children in foster care due to abuse and neglect.
Commissioners’ Court calls upon all citizens to raise their awareness of domestic violence and child abuse in our County. Please call 800-252-5400 to report suspected child abuse.
This is also a great time to donate or volunteer to any of these groups that support our children and victims of domestic abuse, or even consider fostering or adopting a child that needs a safe and loving environment in which to grow.
Thank you to all of these groups and their volunteers for all of the work they do in our community to help and protect our most vulnerable. Please consider donating to them to support their missions (links are below).

Scam of the Week: Classic Facebook Phishing
While cyber threats continue to advance in new and intimidating ways, classic phishing methods are still a favorite among bad guys. Let’s take a look at a recent Facebook-themed phishing attack and see if you can spot the red flags:
The email appears to come from Facebook and starts with “Hi User”. The body states that there is an issue with your account that you must log in to resolve. The email includes a link to “verify” your account and ends with the line “This link will expires in 72 hours, We appreciate your attention to this matter.” If you click the link, you are taken to a phony look-alike Facebook login page. Any information that you enter on this page is delivered straight to the bad guys.
How many red flags did you see? Remember the following tips:
- Question everything. For example, your name is part of your Facebook profile, so why is the email addressing you as “User”?
- Look for a sense of urgency. In this example, the email gives you 72 hours to verify your account. Remember, the bad guys rely on impulsive clicks.
- Pay close attention to the grammar and capitalization. For example, the words “This link will expires in...” should be “This link will expire in...”. Also in that same line, the word “We” is in the middle of a sentence, so this should be lowercase.
