Principal's Message
Happy New Year
Welcome to 2023!
Our New Year's Resolution at Unity is to "Step into the Knight".
What we are referring to is to be bold, be brave. Recognize that trying new things and being daring can be very scary, but we are Knights, and Knights are not afraid to take on new challenges!
We have much to accomplish and talk about in this new year. We want you to be a part of it! Make it a point to reach out to us to ask about your child, engage with your teachers, and work with the school to make us better.
We've already made it past the darkest day of the year, it time for the Knights to rise! Here is to the very best year Unity has ever had! Happy New Year!
Yours in Education,
Eric Kilburn | Unity Principal

Title 1 News
We, together with classroom teachers and para professionals are currently preparing students for our upcoming Winter FASTBridge Screener. The testing will take place in January from the 9th through the 20th. We are focusing on fluent reading with 2nd through 5th grade. Our first graders are working on fluency within sight words, non-sense words and sentence reading. Our Kindergartners are focusing on fluency within letter sounds, non-sense words, beginning sounds and segmenting. We look forward to seeing the growth as we continue to work with our students.
Parents of Kindergarten and first grade students please be on the lookout for an invitation coming home for our upcoming Lunch & Learns. These events will take place during your child’s lunchtime. You will be able to come and enjoy lunch with them and have a short parent connection where we will share ideas to help your students at home.
We look forward to having you at school.
Thanks,
Title Teachers
Get to Know Your Child's Social Medial Platforms
Do the terms Snap map, private account, or ghost mode sound familiar? If you answered no, you are not alone. Many families are unfamiliar with these social media terms and others. The District website offers information for parents on the most popular social media platforms and tips for keeping kids safe online. Information is available here: https://www.siouxcityschools.org/page/social-media-safety
Winter Weather Decisions
Parents and guardians have the right to decide to keep their child home on any day they feel it is unsafe for their student to be in school because of weather conditions. If you believe the weather provides a sincere reason why you may have to keep your student at home, or take your student home when classes are scheduled to continue, you as a parent or guardian will simply need to contact our school office to let us know.

Can We Contact You?
The District sends out important information regarding school closings and cancellations and other updates to our families via phone, email, and text. Additionally, our school will contact you in case of an emergency or student health concern. Make sure your contact information is updated in our system and that your phone accepts the school’s phone calls. Doing this will ensure you receive school communication promptly and we can reach you in case of an emergency. To make updates to your contact information, please contact our office.
Dress Right for Winter
With the cooler temperatures upon us, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the colder winter. Even during the winter season, the District allows recess and outdoor activities to continue as usual, so it is important that students have the right winter weather clothing. When the temperature feels like 15 degrees or lower, students are kept inside for recess and activities. Students should be prepared for the cooler weather with a warm coat, hat, scarf, and gloves. If your student does not have access to cold weather apparel, please contact our school office.
School Closure Information
The weather in Iowa can be unpredictable. If the weather requires us to delay the start of our school day, cancel school for the day, or dismiss school early, information will be sent to families through email, text, and voicemail. In addition, this information is posted to our social media sites and the District website.
Please remember that parents and guardians have the right to make the decision to keep their child home on any day they feel it is unsafe for their student to be in school because of weather conditions. If you believe the weather provides a sincere reason why you may have to keep your student at home, or take your student home when classes are scheduled to continue, you as a parent or guardian will simply need to contact our school office to let us know.
Connecting with Your Student while at School
Need to Connect With Your Student at School?
You may reach your student during school hours by contacting the school office to leave a message for them. If your student needs to contact you during the school day, they may come to the school office.
Dismissal Procedures
Our TK & Kindergarten students exit from doors 25 and 26 (Mrs. Poulson and Mrs. Anderson's rooms). Our 1st and 2nd-grade students exit from the main entryway (door 1). Our 3rd-grade students exit from door 3 which is located behind our loading dock. The 4th and 5th graders exit from door 4 at the North end of the building. Please see the image below to assist you with this visualization. Please work with your family to agree to a common meeting place outside of the building. We do our best to limit student traffic within the building after school.
If you have a preschool child and a child in another grade level we can make special accommodations so that you can pick up all of your children at the preschool door. Please contact your child's teacher to work through this.
Notes from the Nurse
Frostbite—A Winter Weather Hazard
Frostbite is a condition in which skin or part of the body becomes partially frozen due to exposure to cold. Body parts most likely to be frostbitten are the fingers, toes, ears, nose and cheeks. In the beginning stages of frostbite, the skin will become very red and then pale.
DO:
· Do bring the child indoors.
· Do warm the area in a pan of lukewarm water.
· If hands or feet are affected, elevate them above the heart level.
· Keep exposed areas dry to help prevent more frostbite.
DO NOT:
· Do not rub or massage the area.
· Do not warm with a heating pad.
· Do not break blisters that have formed.
CALL YOUR DOCTOR IF:
· The skin blisters.
· The area feels numb after 15 minutes of warming.
· The skin is cold, white, hard and waxy feeling. This usually means the frostbite is severe.
PREVENTION:
· Protect children from cold, wind and moisture.
· Dress them in proper clothing:
Ø Dress your child in several layers of light, loose clothing rather than one heavy garment.
Ø Protect the child’s head and neck with a hat and scarf and his/her face with a mask.
Ø For outdoor play, boots high enough to cover the ankles, two pairs of socks and mittens or gloves should be worn.
Ø Try to make arrangements for your child’s transportation to and from school, instead of walking, on extremely cold days.
