Dear WMMS Families
Happy New Year! I hope your family is enjoying winter break and I can't wait to see all of the students on Thursday! We had a very successful first semester and I'm looking forward to another great semester at WMMS. Thank you for all of your support and be sure to check out the newsletter for some important changes and upcoming events this month. As always, if you need anything please do not hesitate to contact me at bvandelft@kirksville.k12.mo.us or 660-665-3793.

Truman Literacy Lab
William Matthew Middle School, in partnership with the Truman State University Speech and Hearing Clinic, is pleased to announce the continuance of the Truman Literacy Lab into the spring semester of 2023. The Truman Literacy Lab will continue to offer intensive reading instruction Monday through Thursday from 3:00-4:00pm. Students will either be assigned to a Monday/Wednesday session, or a Tuesday/Thursday session. This program will begin on January 30th, 2023 with an approximate end date of May 11th, 2023. The reading instruction builds each week, therefore regular attendance is required in order to remain enrolled in the program. We have a limited number of seats available at this time. If you are interested in having your student considered for this program, please indicate your response in the attached Google Form by January 13th, 2023 to reserve a spot for your student. Any late submissions will be considered as spots are available.
If you have any additional questions regarding the Truman Literacy Lab, please don’t hesitate to contact me at the following email address. Thank you!

3 Lunch Shifts starting January 5th
We will be moving from two lunch shifts to three lunch shifts starting January 5th. Our commons area has become quite congested with the number of students at each shift. The additional lunch shift will provide more room and give students more time to enjoy their meal as going through the lunch line will go quicker. A third lunch shift also allows our students to be physically active in the gym or outside (weather permitting) every day after they are finished eating versus every other day.
8th Grade Lunch Shift - 11:18 AM - 11:42 AM
7th Grade Lunch Shift - 11:42 AM - 12:06 PM
6th Grade Lunch Shift - 12:06 PM - 12:32 PM
Student Attendance Update
Thank you to all parents and guardians for contacting our office when your child is absent. We appreciate your communication and will gladly accept any physician notes for excused student absences. In addition to our daily attendance email/phone call, if your child becomes excessively absent, our office will mail home attendance letters to better communicate with our families. These letters will be used for excessive absences only to keep you informed. We will also be working in conjunction with the Adair County Juvenile Office to help ensure your child's success. We understand that sickness/injury, medical appointments, and family emergencies occur so please continue to call or email our front office anytime your child is absent. Please see Kirksville R-III school board policy JED-AP9(1) for more information regarding student attendance.
Fun Night January 27th 6-8 PM
Our next Fun Night is scheduled for Friday, January 27th, 2023 from 6-8 PM. The Student Council will be selecting a theme and planning fun activities with more information to be shared soon!
