TECHNOLOGY CAMPUS CHRONICLE
VOL 6 ISSUE 5
PRINCIPAL CORNER
Dear OSES Families,
Even though it was a short week, we accomplished a lot in all grades.
Homework can be a polarizing topic. Some families may think there is too much, while others think too little, even though the student has the same teacher. OSES does not have a uniform homework policy. We feel each teacher should have the freedom to assign homework based on the needs of their students. Homework should always be carefully crafted and not assigned for grades sake. Homework can be used by families to connect home with school, we encourage conversation about the topic assigned. Don’t just ask “Did you do your homework?” but instead “What did you learn from your homework?” or “Do you have everything you need to complete the work?”
Lastly, we do understand the need for school and life balance. Students need to decompress, play, listen to music, and explore personal hobbies outside school. Life needs to be balanced, not all homework.

Sixth Grade Chromebook Distribution and Fee
Sixth grade students will be assigned an individual Chromebook this school year. OSES has started handing out Chromebooks to students that have paid the $60 Student Fee via School Pay. We continue to work hard to hand out Chromebooks to students that have paid the fee. If you have not paid, please use the link below. Students will not have the option to use a personal device as it does not include our campus Secure Browser and safety software. Contact Mrs. Carter (Cayce.carter@orlandoscience.org) with any questions.

THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
Bradley
This week in social studies students listened to scenarios in which there was a problem. Students then acted out how to solve that problem in a way that shows cares for others.
In science we finished up our 5 senses unit with a listening walk. Students then worked with a partner to describe and discuss the sounds they heard on the walk.
FIRST
Vancol
In Science, First Grade finished learning how to be a scientist and is now investigating the properties of matter! We started by sorting objects using the physical properties of size, shape, color, and the students expanded upon that to include properties of predator v. prey; sharpness of teeth; and wild animals versus pets. Next we will be expanding upon our knowledge to include the physical properties of weight, mass, temperature and density. For example, we will be predicting and testing how different fruits sink or float based on their physical properties of size, shape, and weight! We are planning a STEM day in October, so stay tuned for the supplies Sign-up Genius!
SECOND
Sonn
2nd grade had a great week. In many classes, students are presenting their Summer Reading Book projects. They are all so proud of their work. As grades are submitted for progress reports next week, now is a great time to check in for any missing work. Students are excited to begin using IXL in their classrooms and at home. Remember students go outside every day. Bringing a water bottle every day is essential!
THIRD
Myers
Classes turned into medical school in third grade this week. Students in accelerated reviewed material on the distributive property of multiplication, as well as identifying the correct text feature for “patient illnesses”. Students did really great and seem to really understand the topics.
FOURTH
Parlewicz
In fourth grade, students are practicing vocabulary acquisition across all subject levels! To help them with learning these new words, students were making all different posters with vocabulary words listed on them. Students got very creative with examples of their words they were focusing on.
FIFTH
Aramayo
This week in Mrs. Aramayo's class the students have been working on comprehension and understanding of contexts in math problems. We have had students represent the contexts in a variety of ways including pictures, using variables, and even a comic strip! Below is a picture of students listening to another student share their drawing for a problem.
SIXTH
Kim
This week in 7th and 8th grade math, we are finishing our unit on probability. Students were able to compare theoretical and experimental probability by conducting an experiment using a spinner and a six-sided die. Students will take their first summative assessment on the probability unit.
SPECIALS

Sahas Devathi@7.20 mi #3. Logan Schuck@6.80 mi# 4. Caleb Stahura@6.60 mi# 5. Sadajit Swain@6.40 mi
Happy Friday!
This month’s character trait is respect. People who are respectful treat others the way they want to be treated!
Here is a great video to watch to learn more about respect! Throughout the month, our ORCAS will be learning more about how to show respect. Don’t know where to start? Try these personal commitments!
Personal commitments to Respect:
I will treat others the way I want to be treated.
I will use good manners.
I will be a good listener.
I will follow the rules.
I will be considerate of others’ feelings and how I affect them.
I will think before I speak.
I will start a “chain reaction” of kindness.
I’ve seen some great examples of respect from our students and staff on campus this week! I hope to give commendations for our ORCA Core Value - Respect myself and others throughout the month!
Have a great weekend!

Any club openings will be listed on the sign up genius.
CLUBS
Hello families!
Please read carefully for all club reminders:

- CAR LINE APP DOWNLOAD: ALL PARENTS MUST HAVE PIKMYKID DOWNLOADED. YOU WILL THEN BE ABLE TO ANNOUNCE YOUR STUDENT YOURSELF WHEN YOU ARE ON CAMPUS. It makes the line longer if you are showing your car tag and not using PIKMYKID. IF YOU MUST SHOW THE CAR TAG, PLEASE BE SURE YOU ARE SHOWING IT TO THE PERSON TAKING NUMBERS BEFORE YOU GET TO THE FRONT OF THE LINE so that by the time you get to the front of the line, your student will be waiting. AGAIN, makes the car line longer if you are showing your tag at the front of the line because people are then backed up behind you.
- if you are having problems logging in or using Pikmykid please reach out to Nicole.Wallace@orlandoscience.org
- LATE ARRIVALS: Students can only be dropped off at the front office if it is AFTER 8:10 (class start time) & parents are with them as THEY NEED TO SIGN THEM IN AS A LATE ARRIVAL. PARENTS CANNOT LEAVE STUDENTS AT THE FRONT BY THEMSELVES.
- SCHOOL PAY: SCHOOL PAY was having technical issues with users attending Charter Schools. School Pay is letting us know it will be a few days before the issues are fixed. Please be patient. You do have 4 weeks to submit club payments. Another email will be sent out when it is fixed on their end.
- CLUBS: Clubs dismiss at 3:40pm and 2:40pm on Wednesdays. ARRIVE IN CAR LINE FOR CLUB PICK UP AT 3:45. (2:45pm for Wednesdays) to prevent congestion in the pick up car line.
- WALKERS: PARENTS must complete Walker Form before a student can be a walker. Walkers sign out at the front desk. WALKERS DO NOT GO INTO THE CAR LINE. THEY WALK OFF-CAMPUS.
- High school students picking up walkers must GO OFF CAMPUS, NOT TO THE CAR LINE.
- SKYWARD ACCESS: SKYWARD IS HAVING TECHNICAL ISSUES. If you are unable to access skyward parent access, be sure you have completed the emergency health form. (BACK PAGE HAS THE HEALTH CONSENT QUESTIONS) and they will be manually entered into Skyward. Another email will be sent out later once SKYWARD is fixed.
- Sibling Pick up: if you have both a highschooler and elementary schooler please take advantage of our new sibling pick up option where highschoolers wait between building one and two. DO NOT park at the high school and walk across Technology Dr as this results in causing the car rider line to backup.
