Welcome Back, Davis Richmond Families!
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL - Monday, Aug. 14th
The first day of school is Monday, August 14. Please note that parents are not permitted in the building. Davis and Richmond have all staff on deck to help your child navigate to their classroom once they arrive. Please follow the normal arrival procedures to help your child get used to the morning routines.
Birthday Celebrations
We love to celebrate birthdays at Davis and Richmond. Your child’s birthday will be announced on our morning announcements and your child will be able to choose a book from our birthday book cart. We do not allow in food for celebrations so please do not send them to school or drop them off, they will not be accepted. If you would like to send in non-edible treats (such as a pencil or non food item) that is ok.
Outside food for students
Students are able to bring their lunch each day to school or they can get lunch at school through our food service provider, Organic Life. We do not accept fast food for students at Davis & Richmond. Please do not drop off or have food sent to Davis or Richmond for your child. If you would like to have lunch with your child, you can come to the main office and sign them out during their lunch period. Thank you for your cooperation.
ELEMENTARY HANDBOOK & DISCIPLINE PROCEDURES
Parents can access the electronic version of the Elementary Handbook on the D303 website. Please note that you will not be receiving a paper copy this year. It is the responsibility of each family to review both handbooks with their children. Thank you for your support.
School Lunches & Breakfast
Eating healthy is an important part of the school day. Parents should send a healthy snack with their child every day that will be eaten with the class at a time set by the teacher. The school day is long and children need that extra nutrition. Sending a water bottle is also very handy and avoids needless interruptions going to the drinking fountain. No snacks are available for purchase at school. For healthy snack ideas please click HERE
Breakfast is available through Organic Life Food Service upon arriving at school and will be charged to pushcoin if the child chooses a breakfast. Please talk with your child if you plan for them to eat breakfast at school. The students will eat as class is starting and do not arrive early for breakfast. Please do not send a breakfast from home for your child to eat at school, only school-purchased breakfasts are allowed. There is no eating allowed on the school busses.
Lunch times are 20 minutes in length and students may choose from 4 menu items or may bring their own lunch. The teacher will ask children for their lunch choice at the start of the school day, but parents may review the menu with their child at home. Lunches are also charged through pushcoin.
For lunch/breakfast pricing, application for free/reduced pricing and more, please see the D303Food Services Webpage.

PTO Board Changes: A Message from Jenna Hancock
Hello families,
It has been my pleasure to serve on the Davis/Richmond PTO board for the past two years, but I have decided to return to the classroom as a teacher and no longer have capacity to give the PTO the time and attention it deserves. Similarly, Melissa Landgraf took on a new job and had to give up her role of Vice President.
Alisa Sawka has stepped up to the role of President. Sarah Petro is the Vice President. Jill Chandler will serve as Treasurer. Sarah Perkins will remain Secretary and Melissa Baswell Williams will continue as Communications Director.
Please give the new board a warm welcome and find out ways you can be part of the fun at the first meeting of the school on August 17th at 7pm in the Davis LRC.

Summer Reading Bingo
Each child brought home a paper copy of the Summer Reading Bingo sheet at the end of last school year. The goal was for your child to complete 12 or more Bingo activities throughout the summer. When your child completes a bingo activity, it should be crossed it out with a parent/guardian’s initials in the square. Here is the link to the Summer Reading Bingo sheet in English and Spanish in case you need another copy.
On the first day of school, please have your child return the Bingo sheet to his/her new classroom teacher, so they can receive a book and a ribbon. Please write your child’s new teacher for the fall of the 2023-2024 school year in the top-right corner. If you have questions, please contact Ms. Hittmeir at christine.hittmeier@d303.org
The Davis Garden is for Everyone!
If you get the chance, stop by the Davis garden. We have an abundance of vegetables and flowers. There are tomatoes, swiss chard, kale, sunflowers, pumpkins, tomatillos, eggplant, herbs, squash, cucumbers, and berries. We also planted milkweed to attract monarch butterflies.
Davis Lock Down Drill
On September 5th, Davis Primary will conduct our state-required annual Lockdown Drill with law enforcement personnel present. During this time, students will review and practice the classroom procedures. Parents/guardians may opt their child out of physical participation in this drill each year by emailing Gina Shaw at gina.shaw@d303.org and Mona Carlson at mona.carlson@d303.org at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled date. Students who are opted out will receive an alternative school safety learning experience with a certified staff member.

New Specials Staff at Richmond
- Mrs. Brandenburg, LRC - Welcome back, Richmond! My name is Mrs. Brandenburg, and I am so excited to be with you in the LRC this year! I can't wait to continue building a love of literacy with all of you. Did you read any good books over the summer? Make sure to stop by the LRC and let me know!
Ms. Kasap, Music - My name is Ms. Kasap. I am thrilled to teach music at Richmond this year. I look forward to meeting all of you on Monday!
Richmond Lock Down Drill
On August 29th, Richmond Intermediate will conduct our state-required annual Lockdown Drill with law enforcement personnel present. During this time, students will review and practice the classroom procedures. Parents/guardians may opt their child out of physical participation in this drill each year by emailing Lisa Simoncelli-Bulak at lisa.simoncelli-bulak@d303.org and Darlene Buffano at darlene.buffano@d303.org at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled date. Students who are opted out will receive an alternative school safety learning experience with a certified staff member.
Foreign Language (FLES)
FLES is offered as an enrichment during the school day to students who are at or above grade level. We will use the fall i-Ready scores to determine students qualifying for enrichment. (Same process as last year) We will then enroll students in FLES after we take the assessment. You may notice your child does not have FLES on their schedule - that is because we will not do enrollment until after the i-ready scores are in. You will receive communication either way to share what programming your child will be enrolled in during their enrichment and intervention time.
SAVE THE DATE - Curriculum Night/Open House: Please join us Tuesday, September 12th anytime between 5:00-6:30 p.m. for our Open House.
Summer Reading
Summer is already here - that means it’s time for the Summer Reading Bingo Challenge! To maintain your child’s reading growth from the school year, it is important they continue to read throughout the summer.
Your child brought home a paper copy of the Summer Reading Bingo sheet before the end of this school year. The goal is for your child to complete 12 or more Bingo activities throughout the summer. When your child completes a bingo activity, cross it out and write a parent/guardian’s initials in the square.
In the fall, have your child return the Bingo sheet to their new classroom teacher, so they can receive a book and prize. Please write your child’s new teacher for the fall of the 2023-2024 school year in the top-right corner. Here is the link to the Summer Reading Bingo sheet in English and Spanish in case you need another copy. If you have questions, please contact Ms. Landells at tracie.landells@d303.org.
I encourage families to visit the St. Charles, Geneva, or other area libraries this summer. The Elgin and Schaumburg libraries are beautiful and worth a drive. Our public libraries offer many great programs and resources for all ages, and spending some time reading books at the library is a great way to spend time together. Happy reading!
