News from Room 102
September 2023
A Note from Ms. Wilke
Welcome Back to School! I'm so excited to welcome all of you to Room 102 for Second Grade! We are going to have an amazing year of learning, growth and discovery! We will spend the first couple weeks of school learning and practicing routines and procedures in the classroom and building. We will also spend a lot of time building our positive classroom community based on Nance's newly adopted core values: Honesty, Empathy, Accountability, Respect and Tenacity.
Nance Knights Have Heart: Honesty, Empathy, Accountability, Respect, Tenacity
Nance Knights new core values - HEART. We have defined these together as a class and we have discussed how to live by these values every day at school and in our wider community.
Honesty: Telling the truth, doing your own work.
Empathy: Understanding other's feelings, "putting yourself in someone else's shoes"
Accountability: Taking responsibility for your feelings, thoughts and actions.
Respect: Using kind words, allowing others to complete their work, being a good group member.
Tenacity: Doing your best on every assignment in class, not giving up when it's hard.
We have discussed how to live by these values every day at school and in our wider community.
What we are learning!
Reading & Writing: Unit 1 - "Where We Are" focuses on our communities - school, neighborhood and city. We will be comparing our community to others through reading and writing. We will be reading realistic fiction and poetry and wrapping up our unit with a Project Based Inquiry about our neighborhood.
Math: Topic 1 - We are reviewing the strategies learned in 1st grade to add and subtract to build fluency in solving equations and word problems.
Social Studies: We are studying Our Government, primarily rules that we have to follow at home and school, laws that must be followed within our city, state and country and our basic human rights.
Science: In science we are learning about the states of matter, and force & motion. We will spend time in our STEAM class on project focusing on these two topics.
