Message from the Principal
As we have rolled out our new grading system this year, we have been very proud of the details and how well things have worked. As we have been through one semester, we are going to make a few small changes to help streamline this process even more. We love our assessment re-take policy and kids have been using this regularly. The only struggle is finding time for our teachers to do the reteaching needed to help a student improve their scores. For this reason, Flexed Friday Viking Time will only be used for reteaching and catching up on school work. All retakes now must be taken after school during our Homework HUB. Students are responsible for making the request to their classroom teacher for a retake. We have expanded Homework HUB and now it will be offered Monday through Thursday from 2:30 - 3:40pm in the LMC. This is a great place for students to go after school to do homework, get help from a teacher, and/or retake an assessment. This is a drop-in service, so by filling out our Homework HUB permission slip, you are allowing your child to access our retake opportunity and get help. If you have not done so this year, please fill out the DIGITAL HOMEWORK HUB PERMISSION SLIP now. This does not mean your child has to attend regularly but allows them to stay when they need to.
One other update to our grading policy is that if a student gets lower than a 60% on an assessment, they will be required to do a retake. We are also going to allow students who have an unexcused absence, including a vacation, to take advantage of the retake option. Schoolwork will remain unexcused, but we want to give all students a chance to show what they have learned.
The final change that we want to share is that we will now require students to remain eligible to participate in clubs as well as sports. With our HUB Clubs starting this trimester, we want to make sure our students keep their academics a top priority. This means that any student who has more than one F on Monday, will not be allowed to stay for any clubs or sports that week. They will be suggested to attend the Homework HUB, to support learning and grades will be rechecked the following Monday.
Thank you for your support as we perfect our grading system and if you have any thoughts or suggestions, please share.
Sincerely,
Gerrie Aulisa
