Egg-cellent Ride
Mrs. White's Physical Science students used their acquired knowledge of Newton's Laws of Motion to design a paper car carrying a raw egg that will race down a 6.5 meter track, only to crash into a cinder block. The car had to hit the block in under three seconds and the egg needed to stay intact. The car was required to be visually appealing, have specific qualities to reduce drag and friction from various sources. The students were only permitted to use three sheets of paper, one straw, four wheels, two axles and hot glue. This was highly competitive and the class winner and eighth-grade winner received bonus points.
George Zupko is Student of the Month
George Zupko has been chosen as Rotary Student of the Month for March. He has selected Cortney Pickens as Teacher of the Month. George has earned the GWA Best of the Best award and has made the Head of School list throughout high school. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Gavel Club (leadership role) and Latin Club and served as a member of Youth Leadership Walton. George also works hard outside of the classroom as the technical director at First Baptist Church of Monroe and as the head of his own video and photography services company, Zup Co Productions. George will attend the University of Georgia and he plans to study electrical engineering. Congratulations to George and Ms. Pickens!
Philip Mashburn is Student of the Month
Philip Mashburn has been chosen as Rotary Student of the Month for April. He selected Johnny Griffin as Teacher of the Month. Philip is an AP Scholar with Distinction, has earned the GWA Best of the Best award, has made the Head of School list throughout high school and served as a GWA Junior Marshal. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Gavel Club, History Quiz Bowl, Latin Club, Model UN, and the varsity soccer team (captain). Philip is a talented member of the GWA Marching Bulldog Band (leadership role), and he made GMEA District Band for the past four years. He will attend Georgia Tech in the fall where he plans to major in chemical and biomolecular engineering. Congratulations to Philip and Mr. Griffin!
Speed Reader
Addie Trinh has successfully met the difficult challenge of reading 40 books in the fifth grade! All fifth graders have been participating in the "40 book challenge" throughout the year. They have been challenged to try and read 40 books before the end of the school year. Addie has accomplished this goal and surpassed it! Congratulations to Addie!
Chalk It Up
Mrs. Stumpf’s Art II class has been working with chalk pastels. The class was introduced to the medium back in March when they spent the first week and a half experimenting and learning different techniques. Students enjoyed the freedom and looseness of working with chalk. For their projects, each student chose their own subject matter. The group finished up the project with a group critique.
Don't Miss the Show!
The excitement is building as opening night approaches for our spring musical, Little Shop of Horrors! Upper school art teacher Mr. Jameson said, "With combined efforts from select students and the entire Art Department staff, we are excited to present to you an updated and elaborate stage experience never before seen at GWA. It is our hope that this production is the beginning of a new chapter in George Walton performing arts, giving our community a more engaging stage and film experience through a cross-curricular and collaborative process. We hope you enjoy Little Shop of Horrors.”
There will be two performances in the auditorium TONIGHT and TOMORROW at 6 p.m. and only a few tickets remain. See Mrs. McDevitt in the auditorium to pick up or purchase tickets. The prices are as follows;
Students: $5
Adults: $10
Dawgs360: Free
Teachers/staff: Free
Latin Convention
Ms. Pickens and eight upper school students attended this year’s GJCL State Convention last weekend at Rock Eagle. Along with hundreds of other Latin students from all over the state, they attended workshops, took academic tests, and competed in both graphic and creative arts. Our students came home with four ribbons:
- Alexa Lo won 1st place in the ninth-grade Modern Myth competition and 3rd place in Black Ink Drawing
- Matthew Shackleford earned 1st for Latin I level Greek Culture and 3rd place for Latin I Greek Derivatives
- Though he was unable to attend the convention, Zelig Miller spent the last few months building the group a chariot that they proudly pulled in the Roman Procession on Saturday
At the sponsor’s banquet on Saturday night, Cortney Pickens was named the Georgia Junior Classical League Teacher of the Year (she was nominated by her own former Latin teacher Eric Adams, who still teaches at Eastside High School). Congratulations to Ms. Pickens and her students!
