A Game to Test Your Fake News Judgement

Factitious is a game developed by veteran journalist Maggie Farley to test users' ability to detect real news from fake. (And take it from me, it's not as easy as you might think!)

On a phone, players swipe left when they think the article in front of them is fake, and right when they believe it's real. On a computer, they click on the red X or the green check mark.

Depending on how you swipe, Factitious provides feedback. Whether your swipe was correct or incorrect, whether the article cites sources that can be checked, whether the story includes direct quotes from credible sources

Stumped? If so, there is a clue. You can click to reveal the article's source.

These two articles, one fake, one real, show how the hints can make a big difference in helping players identify real and fake stories better.

As the end of the school year approaches, join Facing History and Ourselves and a panel of teacher leaders to look back and look ahead. Together, we'll discuss how the challenges of this crisis sparked new insights about teaching and learning. Teaching digital verification to spark news literacy learning – May 21st, 11 AM

Dive deep into the tools and skills needed to verify the authenticity of information, and learn to create engaging fact-checking investigations that inspire students to investigate viral content. Topics include using reverse image searches to determine authenticity; researching domain registration to discover a website’s owner; using archives to explore deleted or changed content; developing keen observation skills to detect false context; and using Google Street View to confirm locations. Understanding bias: A nuanced approach to a vital news literacy topic – May 28th, 11 AM

Bias is one of the most controversial and important subjects in news literacy. People frequently perceive and allege bias in news coverage — but what does this really mean? What makes a piece of news biased, and who decides? What role do our own biases play in our perceptions of bias? This session will help you teach this vital, complex topic in ways that empower students to meaningfully evaluate the fairness and impartiality of news coverage.
