Building Our Future-Ready Skills

Maker projects are exciting!! Just ask these girls from Ann Wilder's second grade class and students from Susan Wezet's fifth grade class. Maker lessons allow you to build curriculum goals around real projects. That can be loads of fun for students. Have you been to the maker lab recently?

Dawn's class used problem solving skills, analysis, perception, appraisal, induction, and took actions to solve 5 challenges in this Valentine's Day Breakout activity. These students were dodging Cupid's arrow which would make them fall in love with homework!

They were designing Natural Selection Cartoons. Working alone or in pairs, students brainstormed and then drew ideas for cartoon panels on whiteboards. They created storylines and pictures to demonstrate their understanding of the process of natural selection. They were able to view each other's ideas and progress and could help their peers with suggestions. Then when ready, they transferred their work from the whiteboards onto paper using colored pencils and markers creating the beginnings of a great 4-panel cartoon!

Scaling the Solar System! Fifth grade students at Farmersville visited the Maker Lab to create a scale model of the solar system using play-dough. They found it extremely difficult to create the dwarf planets using super small amounts of dough and were surprised at how small earth really is in comparison to the giant planets.
