Thank you to our First Graders in Mrs. Laverty's Class who did a service project to give back to our school! They organized all of our winter "extra" clothes for when students forget. They also organized and set up a great location for our Lost & Found. Thank you for organizing and preparing this very important part of our school!

• We practiced a tornado drill and another fire drill. We are required to do emergency drills each year. Everyone did a fantastic job!
  
• We enjoyed presentations from Mrs. Mudge at CP Federal Credit Union.
• Lego Robotics Jr. Club has met twice! The students are really enjoying building robotics!
• We focused on working hard and being kind to everyone. Our school theme this year is "WORK HARD & BE KIND!"
• Officer Ritchey visited each classroom to talk about "The Big 5 Safety Rules!" 1. Sit in a car seat & wear a seatbelt. 2. Don't put things in your mouth that could harm you. 3. Stay away from strangers. 4. Don't touch guns. 5. If someone makes you feel uncomfortable, tell an adult.
• 15 students were honored by their classroom teachers to be "Student of the Month!" These students have been setting a great example for their classmates. We are so proud of you!
• 15 students enjoyed eating Pizza with the Principal! We had fun building towers with marshmallows and toothpicks!

Why did the student eat his homework? Because the teacher told him it was a piece of cake!

Thank you to LIFETOUCH for the great new banner for our school! Lifetouch is the company that takes our student photos each year. They donate a lot back to the school - the banner pictured above, thank you cards, birthday cards, volunteer stickers, treasure boxes, pencils and more. Thank you, Lifetouch!

We have 64 adults that work at Columbia Elementary School! Every one of these adults care for your child in different ways! Our staff members teach your child, help with injuries, give reading interventions, give physical therapy, offer counseling, prepare food, help with cafeteria needs, answer phones, assess students needs and levels, help with IEP goals, help children cross the road safely, order supplies, clean and so much more! We are so grateful for all 64 staff members!

Dale Davis is the head custodian at Columbia Elementary School. He has lived in the Brooklyn area his entire life and even went to school and raised his family here. His Kindergarten teacher at CES was Mrs. Mary Lou Duguid. Dale is very well liked and respected at Columbia School district. He is always available when needed and has an incredible work ethic. He is a positive influence to all the students and staff that have the opportunity to interact with him.

The apple didn’t fall far from the tree, Dale’s son, James, is the manager at Marco’s Pizza in Brooklyn. He brought pizza to the Columbia Elementary open house and donated $1.00 per slice to the school. James is also highly respected by his employees and all customers who have had the pleasure of interacting with him. We want to thank Dale and James for being a positive and caring part of our Columbia Community and hope they remain a part of this community for many years to come.

I want to share with you one of our favorite recipes we make at my house - CROCK POT CHICKEN with tortillas. I first saw it on Pinterest. It is a great recipe to make in the morning and enjoy when you get home from work/school. Spray Crock Pot with cooking spray. Put 4 frozen chicken breasts in the bottom. Put a block of cream cheese on top of the chicken. Around the chicken, layer a can of black beans, a can of corn and a can of rotel. Cook on low all day (6-8 hours). Cook the tortillas when you get home (pictured below). The tortillas only have 5 ingredients and no preservatives! They are a favorite at the Wright household. Serve with sour cream, salsa and cheese if you would like :)
