Meet Your MTSS Specialist, Molly Graber and Language Arts Specialist, Kiera Degman
Please take a moment to meet our PAWesome MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports) Specialists, Molly Graber and Kiera Degman. Mrs Graber and Mrs Degman work so hard with our teachers and students to provide supports in Reading and Math. If you see them around, please tell them THANK YOU for all their hard work.
Meet Kiera Degman: Language Arts Specialist
My name is Mrs. Degman, and I am the Language Arts Specialist at Longfellow School. This is my 16th year teaching and my 7th year as the Language Arts Specialist and MTSS Leader at Longfellow! My passion is teaching and my goal is to foster a love of reading in my students! As the Language Arts Specialist, I support students in grades K-5 both in and out of the classroom. I provide targeted instruction to meet the individual needs of the students. I absolutely love the fact that I am able to work with kindergartners through fifth graders to help students develop into successful readers and writers. One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is watching how students grow and develop. I love being a part of the amazing Longfellow Community! On a personal level, I live in Downers Grove with my husband, son, and daughter. We love to travel, eat good food, and spend time with family and friends.
Meet Molly Graber: MTSS Specialist
I work as the MTSS Interventionist at Longfellow School and this is my sixth year here. I have worked at other D97 schools as an interventionist and prior to that was a second grade teacher for several years in Chicago. As an interventionist, I work with small groups of students in kindergarten through fifth grade in both math and reading. The best part of my job is seeing the growth and confidence built during our small group sessions that leads to students being better able to access the work in their classrooms. I love my job because I get to know students from across the whole school community and work with all of the awesome Longfellow educators. When I am not at Longfellow, I am busy with my seven year old son and nine year old daughter living in Ukrainian Village in Chicago.
Can you guess who this is?
It's Molly Graber, dressed as a Bear Necessity of the past! The students got a kick out of Molly's costume; she was the vintage Bear Necessity......a collector's item!
Longfellow Bears Celebrate Halloween
Check out your awesome costumes of our Longfellow staff. Teachers were dressed as M&Ms, donuts, Barbie and Ken dolls, Super Mario characters, an Uno deck, Elephant and Piggy and many more.
Honoring Baptiste Andry
Message from Señora Liza Marinelarena: Every year our department in collaboration with the art department creates an ofrenda honoring the loved ones from our school. This year with the blessing of Baptiste's parents, the ofrenda will be solely dedicated to Baptiste. It is truly an honor and privilege to be able to create this for their family. Our students have been hard at work painting beautiful watercolor paintings that we will create into cut-out hearts. Our goal was to have every student and staff create a heart that was linked together to put on the fence. The hearts will be boxed and given to the family when the ofrenda is taken down on Friday, November 3rd
Attention 4th and 5th Grade Families: MASTERY CONNECT starts Monday, November 6th
Hello 4th and 5th grade families. Starting Monday, November 6th, your child will take the Reading and Math assessment known as Mastery Connect. The ELA MasteryConnect Assessments measure student understanding of the Illinois Learning Standards in the areas of reading and writing. Students in grades 4-5 read passages and answer standards-aligned assessment questions similar to content and rigor they will encounter on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR). Please ensure that your child gets enough sleep and eats breakfast. The teachers are super proud of all the hard work that 4th and 5th graders have put forth this school year! Way to go Longfellow Bears!
Turkey Trot: Tuesday, November 7th
The Turkey Trot being held on Tuesday, November 7 during Specials. Students must wear gym shoes. It is a non competitive event for our 3-5 grade students.
Panorama Climate and Culture Survey is Wednesday, November 8th for Grades 3rd-5th
Hello Longfellow Community: On November 8th, your child will take the Panorama Survey. District 97 is working with Panorama Education, a student survey platform, to support us in administering school culture and climate surveys to our students in grades 3-8. The purpose of the survey is for students to share their perceptions on engagement, school climate, school safety, sense of belonging, and teacher-student relationships. Students will complete the online survey in school and it will take about 10 minutes to complete. Student responses are confidential. Please ensure your child is present at school on Wednesday, November 8th so they can take the survey in their classroom with their teacher.

PROCESS FOR REPORTING POSITIVE COVID-19 CASES TO D97 SCHOOLS
District 97 remains committed to maintaining safe and healthy schools. We continue to work in partnership with the Oak Park Department of Public Health, following guidance set by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).
When should a child remain home from school?
Staying home if you are ill is essential to keep infections—including the virus that causes COVID-19— out of schools and prevent spread to others. Please visit the District 97 Health Services page for more information about when to stay home. If you have specific questions, please contact your school nurse.
COVID-19 Guidelines for 2023-24
Following IDPH guidelines, individuals who test positive for COVID-19 must stay home for five days after the first day of symptoms or testing positive (Day 0). They may return to school on Day 6 if:
They are 24 hours fever free with no fever-reducing medication AND
No diarrhea or vomiting for 24 hours AND
Improvement of other symptoms.
Masks are strongly recommended around others for five days (through Day 10). Per local guidance, anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 should also complete Oak Park Department of Public Health's Positive at Home COVID 19 Test form.
