Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students and Families!
Thank you to everyone who attended conferences either in person or by Zoom. We are grateful for the opportunity to connect with families. Please feel free to reach out to teachers with any questions or concerns. I am excited to connect with families during our next Coffee with Cari. It is this coming Thursday, February 9 at 5:00 PM in the CHS library. This opportunity will be followed at 6:00 by Family Forecasting Night.
The forecasting process, where students select the courses that they will take the following year, is very important. We are presenting forecasting materials to students in Advisory on Thursday, 2/9. That evening we will be hosting Family Forecasting Night in order to assist students and families in this process. Our counseling team will be there to answer any questions or concerns regarding selecting courses or the forecasting process.
CHS students continue to excel in clubs and athletics. Our unified Basketball team had another outstanding performance. The athletes are talented and inspiring. Please note that their final game of the season is at home next Tuesday, 2/7 at 4:00. Our Future Business Leaders of America hosted districts; many students won district championships and even more qualified for the State Business Leadership Conference. We also recently celebrated 5 student athletes who signed to play their respective sports at the collegiate level.
Our wrestling team continued their undefeated ways and is looking forward to their district meet, Saturday February 18 at CHS.. Our swimmers have had similar success and are looking forward to their district meet at Parkrose on February 10 and 11. CHS Women swimmers finished 8-0, and the Men finished 7-1 in the NWOC conference. Our Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams both just had big wins against Hood River. Both teams are chasing playoff berths as they compete in the second half of the league season. The Canby Cougar Dance Team competed at the Dance and Drill Coaches Association Category Championships. The Cougar Dancers competed in the Modern, Contemporary, and Jazz divisions and earned 1st place in each category! This is the fourth year in a row they have won the Contemporary Championship and the 10th year in a row they have been awarded the Modern Championship. It is on to state for the Cougar Dancers.
As we start the busy month of February, I am constantly amazed at our talented students. Their continued success in and out of the classroom inspires me daily.
Have a wonderful week!
Best,
Cari Sloan

Important Information
Important Assessment Information for Canby Families
Thank you for supporting your child’s participation in Oregon Statewide Assessments. Assessment is an important part of each student’s academic experience. Beginning in kindergarten and through grade 12, learners in the Canby School District experience a variety of formative, interim, and summative assessments. Oregon Statewide Assessments are one example of a summative assessment administered in grades 3 through 8, and grade 11. Students in these grade levels are required to participate in English Language Arts and Math assessments annually. In grades 5 and 8, students also participate in Science. Assessment tasks are tied to grade-level standards and units of study. Each assessment is an opportunity for students to demonstrate cumulative growth and learning over the course of their school experience.
Canby schools begin Oregon Statewide Assessments in March; and Canby School District, like all districts in Oregon, is striving for 95% or greater student participation. This goal is essential for understanding the depth and breadth of learning for student groups across our schools, and for evaluating programs and resources. Oregon Summative Assessment data provides information to the Canby community and to district teams about our successes or strengths and areas for improvement.
Your principal and teachers will be communicating additional information about Oregon Statewide Assessment dates and ways to support your student’s success. Please reach out to your school principal or classroom teacher if you have further questions. Canby School District appreciates your partnership.
State Testing Dates for 11th graders:
ELA=Feb 6-10
Math=Feb 13-14
Science=Feb 21-24
Forecasting Information:
Forecasting for students is the second week of February in Advisory. It is very important that students attend their advisory. Forecasting is the process where we build next year’s schedule based on student needs and requests. It is important for families to work with their students on their course choices. The more accurate the information, the more likely students will get the class choices they request. The schedule will also be more balanced and serve our students’ needs more fully. This process is essential, and we look forward to partnering with students, staff, and families in order to build the best schedule for next year.
Important Forecasting Dates:
Forecasting materials distributed in Advisory, Thursday, February 9
Family Forecasting Night, Thursday, February 9 @ 6:00 PM
Student Forecasting Fair, Friday, February 10 @ lunch
Forecasting materials collected in Advisory, Thursday, February 16
Please note: This is for current 9-11 graders. We will go through a similar process with 8th graders in March.

Attendance at CHS
To ensure the accuracy and efficiency of our attendance process, please remember the following guidelines:
If your student needs to leave class for an appointment or because they are sick, inform the attendance office 30 MINUTES PRIOR to leave time. This will help us ensure that your student receives a note to leave class in a timely manner. Students will not be excused without a note.
Pre-Excused Absence: For any anticipated absence that will be more than three days, students are expected to pick up a Pre-Excused Absence Form from Jessie Munoz at the Attendance Office.
To report an absence, call Jessie Munoz at our attendance line at 503-263-7210 or email chs-attendance@canby.k12.or.us.
Students have 48 hours to have unexcused absences excused. Students may lose the opportunity to make up work for credit due to unexcused absences. Please report an absence as soon as possible.
Remember that attendance matters and students who attend class regularly are more likely to stay on track, graduate on time, learn deeply, and get the most from their high school experience.
