October 22, 2019 - Regular Meeting
The Wenatchee School Board will now provide a "Board Meeting Summary Briefing" after each Board meeting. The summary includes a short description of the main topics and action items. These summaries are not meant to replace minutes. The minutes for each meeting are approved and posted after the next regularly scheduled meeting. We hope these summaries provide some basic information and context around the reports, presentations and action items.

Wenatchee High School ASB representative Kelly Norlin shared an update on fundraising events and activities at the school.
SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS
Introduction of School Resource Officers Watch
Dr. Gordon said he was honored to have two resources officers and thanked the city of Wenatchee for the partnership that afforded this opportunity. New School Resource Officer (SRO) Jared Shepard shared his background and excitement for his new position. He commented on how much he enjoys being out and in the schools and working with kids. He expressed pride in the city-school partnership. SRO Jared Renfield explained that the onboarding and orientation for Shepard only took a few weeks and that they are already seeing gains in building relationships with kids. The two officers are working on training plans and community forums on vaping and other issues as well as a video project with NCW Life Channel.
Discipline Data Follow-Up Watch
Mark Helm, Assistant Superintendent
Mr. Helm presented a summary report of additional data on office referrals that was requested by the Board at the last meeting. The number of unique students with referrals was broken down by: Elementary, Middle School, and High School by percentage with “n” values.

Policy Updates - 1st Read
Dr. Gordon explained that a policy committee has been created to review and update board policies. Dr. Sandberg and Ms. Jaecks are the Board representatives on the committee. Ther is a great deal of work to be done and the group feels that this is a good process moving forward. Once policies are updated, notifications will be sent out to district staff.
ACTION Watch
Resolution #05-19 - Surplus Property
Larry Mayfield, Executive Director of Operations and Finance
The board approved taking action to surplus a mobile home located on the District’s Malaga property.
BOARD COMMUNICATION Watch
Dr. Vega-Villa announced that she will be presenting as the MESA Director for WVC at a STEM Pathways conversation on October 27th. The event is being organized by the Pinnacles Prep Charter School.
Dr. Sandberg shared her experience at the October 9th Community Conversation on school facilities. She hoped that there would have been more representation from the Latinx community. She shared some of the feedback and concerns expressed by participants related to the addition of a portable classroom, and the learning environment and plans for expansion. Ms. Jaecks commented that she appreciated that district staff was present to field specific facilities questions and that she looks forward to hearing from the broader community.
SUPERINTENDENT REPORT Watch
Dr. Gordon shared that he spent most of the Tuesday with State Superintendent Reykdal during his visit to Lewis and Clark to observe the dual-language program. He appreciated the thoughtful agenda and learning opportunities that LC principal Alfonso Lopez created for the state superintendent.
October is National Principals Month and we will recognize our outstanding principal leaders at the first board meeting in November.
Dr. Gordon also attended some of the homecoming festivities and was impressed with the level of pride among students, staff and the community.
The next Board community conversation will be held on October 28 at 6 p.m in the Pybus Public Market board room. Sarah and Sunny will be the board members attending.
