Art 2 Quarter 4 Reflection Project
by Wesley White
Overview of Quarter 1 Project
I chose to create a color triangle. The reason I chose this was because I wanted to make a geometric shape. Also, a triangle is based on the number three, and there are three primary colors, six secondary colors, and three tertiary colors. This allowed me to break up the triangle so that there was a flow in it. The first thing I did was make the structure of the triangle and label all of my smaller triangles. I then painted primary colors, secondary colors, and tertiary colors. The final detail I added was make a smaller triangle in the center which held the white tints of all 12 colors. The complete final project had 24 total colors.
Overview of Quarter 2 Project
The project I chose to work on for Quarter 2 was a Limited Palette Project. I had to paint something using only three colors, and I chose to use red, yellow, and white, because I was creating a sandwich. The main reason I created a sandwich was simply because I had one for lunch sitting there, and I wanted to use that as a guide. For the cheese, I used a really light yellow, so that the yellow for the mustard would stick out more. For the turkey, I used pink, and for the crust I used orange, and in some places, traces of red. For the actual bread, I used all three colors combined, but mostly white to make the red and the yellow not as dominant. I finished a little early for this project, and decided to do a background. So, I used a palette knife to spread white out around the canvas to give the background texture. I also used this technique for the turkey. Finally, I finished off the background with hints of yellow to give the painting a complete look.
Overview of Quarter 3 Project
For Quarter 3, I chose the Linoleum Cut project. The reason for this is because I had used paint for the first two projects, and I wanted to do something different. Specifically, I chose to cut out a lion because that is my favorite animal. The first thing I did to create this art piece was trace a sketch based off of an image from the internet. I made sure to sketch within the certain measurements of the actual piece of linoleum so it would fit. I then cut it out of my sketchbook, and taped it on carbon paper, which was put on top of the linoleum. Once it was transferred to the linoleum, I traced it again with a Sharpie marker so that the lines were easier to see. Next, I cut my channels so my other cuts would be cleaner. I then did multiple prints until I got to my finished product. The image is a print of ink on yellow construction paper after the linoleum is pressed against it.
Description of my Growth
I have learned a lot about art. One of the lessons I learned is that art reflects the artist, and that most artworks have some sort of story behind them. These stories can be very deep and meaningful to the artist's own life and/or to society in general. I have also learned that art is not specific, and there is not simply one way to create an artwork. Personally, I have learned that I am determined and when I have a goal in mind, I have the drive to achieve that goal. I have also learned that I am helpful when others need my help, and I am able to encourage them when they are down.
Which Project am I most Proud of and Why?
I am most proud of the linoleum cut of a lion that I did. The reason for this is because this project is the one I worked the most on and the hardest on. I came into class day in and day out working on this, and each day, I knew what I was supposed to be working on and I was diligent and productive. I asked questions when necessary, and through trial and error, my final project was clean and neat. My biggest weakness or need of growth this year has been asking questions that I definitely could have answered on my own.
What Kind of Art am I Working on now, and What Art inspires me?
I am currently working on a bike fender at the public workshop. The use of it is to essentially stop any dirt, mud or water from getting on the bottom of your pants while you ride. It is homemade, and I am really excited about the final project. I can also make it look pleasing to the eye by carving certain designs around it.
As far as the art that inspires me, everything around me can inspire me. However, most of all, my favorite artwork are human beings, and the artist who most inspires me is God. Not only did he create the world in all of its glory, but he created us in his own image. This inspires me because it gives me hope for the future and strength to get through every day. The image to the right is a picture of me in front of miles of trees and mountains. A link to a video that talks about this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZHRpi4z7zk
