Pride,
Happy Sunday! I hope each of you had a great weekend. I spent Saturday at my daughter's Region Swim Meet where she earned 2 more personal bests times and she qualified for the state meet in her second event. It was an incredible moment for us because she's worked so hard this season and she set goals. It was great to see her achieve them during this final meet of the season, before the state competition next week.
As I stood on the side of the pool deck for 3 hours on Saturday, I was thinking about John Foley. I met John on Wednesday in Columbia where he was the keynote for the "Kids First" conference that was put on by both statewide charter authorizers: SC Public Charter School District and Erskine College. John is a retired Blue Angels Pilot and author of the book "Fearless Success."
What made me think about John was the foundation he started. It's called Glad To Be Here. Glad To Be Here is a mindset that enables higher performance. Research shows that teams and individuals that embrace a positive mindset as a core belief improve communication and inspire commitment and buy-in to group objectives.
It's similar to the thoughts of Jon Gordon that I shared a few weeks ago about the mind shift from "I have to" to "I get to." It's not that I have to wake up Monday morning and go to work. It's that I'm blessed that I get to wake up Monday morning and get to work with some outstanding staff and students.
"Glad to be here" isn't just a slogan or something to say. It's a movement that defines who we are and helps us create a positive impact on the day and those around us.
Lions, on behalf of ALL of our staff, we are glad to be here and we are honored that you've made the choice to entrust Riverwalk Academy with the education of your student.
In Strength and Blessings,
~Dr. Compton

School Lunches

The Riverwalk Academy Mobile App
Hopefully by now, you've had a chance to check out our new website. If you haven't noticed already, there's the main page, but there's also a dedicated page to our elementary school, middle school, and high school. While each page looks similar, each page's content is different and tailored to the different audiences.
Our new app has now released on the App Store and soon to release on Google Play. Once downloaded, there are two thing's you'll want to do:
- enable notifications
- subscribe to your school (school wide, and elementary or middle or high school)
Below is a short video that demonstrates how to do this.
Elementary Guidance with Mrs. Carr
Welcome to October. Welcome to more fall weather. Welcome to a new month in guidance at Riverwalk. This month I will keep spreading the positivity of The Energy Bus for Kids to our students. Rule #2 - Fuel Your Ride with Positive Energy. What does this mean? Little George talks to Joy about all the challenges of his day at school. The struggles and obstacles of his day. She tells him that he has to fuel his ride with positive energy and he asks what is that? Joy explains, as I will explain to the students, that having a positive attitude about school can help us to be more successful. We will talk about what makes them feel happy and what makes them feel successful. I will emphasize that the highlights and accomplishments of any day can be the one thing, person or event that made you smile, laugh, and feel great.
On Friday I had a challenge I had to face and I was scared, anxious and nervous. I absolutely love going into each classroom and talking with the students, guiding them and listening to them. I am not good with groups of adults. My ability to do presentations in front of my peers has always been a challenge. I realized I get extremely negative about myself and all my abilities when faced with this challenge. It is something I need to work on. I need to use Rule #2 and find the positivity instead of the negative. Challenges are just that - difficult, scary - but if we change our thinking from negative to positive and we are thankful - we can face the challenges. This is how I want our students to learn they can start each day. Each day can be a great day with positive energy!
Have a fabulous week! Hugs.
