HET September 2021 Newsletter

I sincerely hope that everyone took time this summer to relax and connect with friends and family again. The first two weeks of school have been wonderful. It is great to see students back in class and learning. Our students have so many talents and strengths and I look forward to seeing students showcase these throughout the year. Our staff have been busy laying the foundation for a terrific year ahead. We have already had opportunities to participate in community building through our court activities.

Every year brings new opportunities with new learning experiences and activities to connect everyone. Within these challenging times, it is important to remember that we are a school that focuses on caring and respect for one another. In fact, our school motto "Bringing out the Best" is what I hope our school community will endeavour to strive for each and every day of the coming school year.

We have an incredible staff that puts our students first and will work hard throughout the school year to provide a safe and caring learning environment for each student. We have many more activities planned to continue to build a strong and caring school community. Throughout the year HET will aim to have consistent communication with our families. In future newsletters I will continue to report on our plan to always improve and build upon our successes.

Hello, Helen E. Taylor community! I am very excited to be part of such a wonderful school, staff, and student body. This year marks my tenth year working for Peace Wapiti Public School Division and my first year as an Assistant Principal. This year at HET I am also going to be teaching grade 7 and 9 mathematics, and some PE on Wednesdays. Aside from the classroom, you will be seeing me on the court coaching and cheering on our student athletes! I also wish to become more involved in the community of Wembley, so if there are any community events that you need a helping hand with, please let me know. 9:05 AM so if you have not notified us prior to that, you will receive a call.

Thank you to so many of our parents/guardians who have already completed their forms. These are emailed out to the "primary" contact on file, to make any changes to contact information, to update any medical needs, to give permission to leave school property on a field trip, to "register" your child for the new academic year. Please check your Inbox, Spam or All Mail for an email from "REGISTRATION" with "Helen E. Taylor School Returning Student Demographic Form for...". If we do not have your latest email or are unable to find this email, please contact our office for assistance.

We would love to see parents join our HET School Council. Please read the attachment--you may be surprised to know what the role of a School Council is. Looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting!

We have already started our Junior High Volleyball program this year! Thank you to Mrs. Westad, Mr. Clark and Ms. Flett for coaching our teams this year. Unfortunately, at this time, we will not be able to have spectators at our games but we will cheer you on in spirit. GO Knights!!

Wear orange on Wednesday, September 29 to recognize and raise awareness about the history and legacies of the residential school system in Canada. We will be honouring the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on this day with some school activites.

Helen E. Taylor School will be closed on Thursday, September 30 in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliatin. This comes in the wake of discovering the remains of more than 1,300 Indigenous children in unmarked graves at former residential schools since May of this year. Check to see what your community is doing to honour this day. Wear orange to show your support.
