Bed bug Invasion
There are few less welcome guests than bed bugs. They are not invited and, like vampires, feast on the blood of humans and animals in the dead of night. Bed bugs do not live their lives and sneak away quietly - they are invasive.
The bed bug population has grown rapidly in recent years; They were found in all 50 states, and they do not discriminate between low-income and luxury settings. They can live in places that would surprise you: offices, hotels, airplanes, cinemas, student residences and mattress stores (among others). Bed bugs can enter your home by snagging on clothing, luggage, or soft things and upholstered furniture that you buy at any store.
The sad truth is that even your friends can bring these hideous creatures into your home. In this day and age, we are at risk of a bed bug invasion.
Bed bug bites
Bed bugs can feed on you and your family late at night, when you are least aware of their presence. They are drawn to body heat, they look for a comfortable place, and (there's no nice way to say this) they suck blood while dreaming nice things.
Some people suffer more from bed bug bites than others. In fact, you and your family members may react differently to these insects. While one family member may not react at all, others may have a full-blown allergic reaction.
Symptoms of bed bug bites vary. From mild itching to small bumps on the skin, severe hives, or hives on the body, the effects of bed bug bites can mimic other types of insect bites and rashes. The presence of bed bug saliva on the skin can cause immediate irritation. A totally allergic reaction to stings can take a few days to appear.
Bed bugs usually leave rows or groups of bites; you are unlikely to be bitten by a bed bug if you have only one bite mark. (Look for spiders or mosquitoes).
bed bugs are not known to transmit disease. However, skin infections can develop in or around the injured area. If you can't stop scratching, make sure your hands are clean. Calamine lotion can relieve itching.
Find what's lurking
Bed bugs are elusive and shy. During the day, they usually hide in mattress seams, bedding creases, under curtains, and between walls. They can live anywhere and you may not detect them on visual inspection.
About the size of an apple seed, with a flat body and dark to reddish brown in color, adult bed bugs can be seen with the naked eye (if you're lucky enough to catch an unsuspecting one). You can detect its presence in these other ways:
- Small rust-colored spots or traces of bloody stool
- Mahogany-colored exoskeletons that leave on the surface when they change the skin
- A sweet and unpleasant odor resembling stale and rotten fruit
- Night sightings with red light in a dark room
- A dead or dying insect on any surface
Bed bugs don't fly or jump, but they crawl into their den before you wake up. Also, they don't feed every day. You may wake up with bites and not see another trace for days. Some can survive 6 months between feeding and the next. They really are a complex species of parasites.
Infestation or localized problem?
The best way to get rid of these insects is to catch them in time and address them seriously. If they have a chance to reproduce, lay eggs, or take over a wide area, you will have a problem that will go on for months or even years before you can solve it.
If you suspect you have a bed bug infestation, call a professional exterminator immediately. Learn about this method and discuss chemicals and other treatments. Conduct a thorough investigation and act quickly.
Maybe you will get lucky and fix the problem before I move on. Bed bugs can only lodge in your bedroom or on the couch, in luggage or on clothes. Take action immediately. If you don't, in a short time you will be living with generations of these hideous creatures.
Eradication with extreme temperatures
Bed bugs cannot tolerate extreme heat or cold. They will die in a few hours when temperatures exceed 118 ° F. Temperatures of 0 ° F or below will kill bed bugs and eggs in about 4 days. These temperatures must be reached in all the articles you are dealing with. Allow several hours for the bed bugs to reach the proper temperature in their gut before setting the timer.
Your home freezer may not cool down to 0 ° F. At temperatures closer to 30 ° F, seal clothing and small items with plastic and store them in the freezer for 40 to 50 days to kill pests and eggs.
Another effective way to deal with small-area infestations is to wash bedding, clothing, and covers in hot water and dry in extreme heat for at least 30 minutes (read labels to determine if extreme heat is safe or not).
Obviously, it is impossible to put rugs, mattresses and furniture in the freezer or dryer. But you can expose them to extreme temperatures.
Get rid of those bed bugs with steam
Hot steam can penetrate soft surfaces, raising the temperature above levels that bed bugs can tolerate. Most furniture, mattresses, box spring bases, fabrics, and floors can be safely steamed. Read labels or call the manufacturer before steaming to eradicate pests.
The surface temperature must reach 160 ° F-180 ° F to effectively eliminate bed bugs. While steaming, use an infrared thermometer every few feet to make sure you keep the heat at this lethal level. Heat will penetrate 3 to 5 "into most soft surfaces and reach cracks in hardwood floors and baseboards up to 2.5".
Remember: Only bed bugs exposed to steam will be removed. You may need to repeat the treatment several times over the course of a few days or weeks to completely eliminate the bugs effectively.
Here's what to keep in mind when choosing a vaporizer:
- Water temperatures between 212 ° F and 230 ° F
- Constant steam temperature
- Air nozzles and brushes that distribute pressurized steam (never use a precision nozzle, you will blow the bugs onto other surfaces, which will spread the problem)
- A large water tank that provides enough time to steam all surfaces
Each item will be damp after steaming. Direct fans directed to each surface to dry them efficiently.
Once you've thoroughly and repeatedly steamed your mattress, box spring, and pillows, seal them with a bed bug-proof coating. The persistent pests within each item will not be able to feed and will eventually die. You will also avoid a new infestation by creating a barrier that prevents the entry of new bed bugs.
Lack of immunity
A bed bug infestation is a bummer. For whatever reason, there is a stigma attached to bed bugs, although they can be found in expensive resorts as well as in the neater of homes. People who travel are at high risk, as they are those who live in places close to other people.
As the bed bug population grows (some say the growth rate is over 5,000% since the 1990s), the likelihood of these unwelcome guests entering your home increases. Here are some tips to avoid a full-letter infestation:
- Inspect hotel rooms for evidence of bed bugs
- Put your luggage away when you return home and check each seam and slit well
- Wash clothes in hot water
- Freeze small items that you suspect may have been in contact with bed bugs
- Check your home periodically to see if you find traces of bed bugs
- Know what bed bug bites look like and take action quickly
- When in doubt, contact a professional bed bug exterminator for a home inspection.
