GRADE CATEGORIES & WEIGHTS
Formative grades category
Graded assignments intended to help students learn content or material are entered in Infinite Campus under the Formative category.
The average of grades in this category makes up 30% of a student’s end of quarter average.
Summative grades category
Graded assignments intended to measure what skills and knowledge students learned at the end of a unit or instructional sequence. These may be tests, quizzes, projects, papers, etc.
The average of grades in this category makes up 70% of a student’s end of quarter average.
Determining end of quarter average
(Average of grades entered in summative category).7 + (Average of grades entered in formative category).3
HCHS GRADING SCALE FOR COMPLETED WORK
Teachers use any number along this scale to record summative and formative grades in IC’s Gradebook for completed student work.
50 - 100
HCHS GRADING POLICY FOR MISSING WORK
Teachers mark “M” when a student does not turn in assignments graded in the summative or formative categories by each assignment’s due date. Infinite Campus automatically calculates an “M” as a 0.
“M”s marked in the summative category
Changing an “M” to a grade for assignments/assessments in the summative category:
Students must turn in completed work or make-up assessments marked “M” in the summative grades category by the end of the quarter (9 weeks) in which the work was due. (See Living Calendar for dates.)
Work in the summative category marked “M” that is not turned in by the end of the quarter in which the work is due permanently remains an “M” in IC and is calculated as a 0 in the student’s summative grades average.
“M”s marked in the formative category
Changing an “M” to a grade for assignments/assessments in the formative category:
Students must turn in completed work marked “M” in the formative category by the end of the mid-quarter progress reporting period (4.5 weeks) in which the work was due. (See Living Calendar for dates.)
The HCHS late work penalty is applied.
Late work penalty - Grades for completed work turned in late will be marked 10 percentage points off from whatever grade the student earned for that assignment.
Work in the formative category marked “M” that is not turned in by the end of the mid-quarter progress reporting period in which the work is due permanently remains an “M” in IC and is calculated as a 0 in the student’s formative grades average.
HCHS GRADING POLICY FOR INCOMPLETE WORK
In order to receive a grade, work submitted by students must be complete When a student turns in incomplete formative or summative work, teachers return the work to the student, then mark “I” and type “complete by <date> for credit” in IC. “I”s become “M”s if work is not completed and turned in by the deadline marked by the teacher in IC.
“I”s marked in the summative category
Students must turn in completed work or assessments marked “I” in the summative grades category by the end of the quarter (9 weeks) in which the work was due. (See Living Calendar for dates.)
When students complete and turn in work by this deadline, teachers will convert the “I” in the summative category to the grade the student earned with the HCHS late work penalty applied.
Late work penalty - Grades for completed work turned in late will be marked 10 percentage points off from whatever grade the student earned for that assignment or test.
If students do not complete work marked “I,” teachers convert the “I” to an “M” at the end of the quarter.
“I”s marked in the formative category
Students must turn in completed work marked “I” in the formative category by the end of the mid-quarter progress reporting period (4.5 weeks) in which the work was due. (See Living Calendar for dates.)
When students complete and turn in work by the deadline, teachers will convert the “I” in the formative category to the grade the student earned with the HCHS late work penalty applied.
Late work penalty - Grades for completed work turned in late will be marked 10 percentage points off from whatever percentage the student earned for that assignment or test.
If students do not complete work marked “I,” teachers convert the “I” to an “M” at the the end of the mid-quarter progress reporting period.
SUMMATIVE RETAKE/RESUBMISSION REQUESTS
Students may request to retake or resubmit assignments entered in the summative grades category under the following conditions:
All assignments graded in the formative category prior to the summative assignment/assessment were turned in on time.
The student has no unexcused absences for that class for the current quarter.
SUSPENSIONS
When a student is suspended, teachers will mark work in the formative category that is assigned or collected on the day(s) of the suspension “M” AND type “suspension” in the comments next to the “M.” Students are not allowed to make up these assignments. Students will have until the end of the quarter to complete summative assignments or assessments missed while suspended.
HCS DISTRICT REQUIREMENTS FOR NUMBER OF GRADES
At the end of each mid-quarter progress reporting period (4.5 weeks), each course should have at least 4 grades entered in IC. At least one of those grades should be in the summative category.
At the end of each quarterly report card reporting period, each course should have at least 10 grades entered in IC. At least three of those grades should be in the summative category
FINAL GRADE CALCULATIONS AND GPA
A final course average is assigned at the end of the school year using the following calculation:
(Q1 average).2 + (Q2 average).2 + (Q3 average).2 + (Q4 average).2 + (Midterm exam grade).1 + (Final exam grade).1
The course average is converted to a letter grade using the HCS District-wide Grading Scale:
A = 90-100
B = 80-89
C = 70-79
D = 60-69
F = 59 & below
Final course letter grades are converted to a GPA using these steps:
Convert each letter to a value.
A = 4 (5 for AP courses)
B = 3 (4 for AP courses)
C = 2 (3 for AP courses)
D = 1 (2 for AP courses)
F = 0
Find the average of those values to determine a student’s GPA.
Final course letter grades and GPAs appear on student transcripts.
