Why Choose GISD for Dyslexia Services?
Most highly qualified personnel to work with students with dyslexia: Every campus has a minimum of one CALT (Certified Academic Language Therapist) that goes through two years of training and 700 practicum hours with supervision and must pass the national exam in order to serve our students.
Equitable services for ALL students identified with dyslexia: Our district believes in equitability of dyslexia services. The same qualifications, standards and curriculum provided is at the highest level.
Whole Student Approach: Every aspect of the student is considered and supported based on needs. From self-efficacy to self-advocacy, we want our students to be supported and encouraged so they have every opportunity to succeed.
Curriculum: Dyslexia is not one size fits all. Our curriculum is proven and includes all components of the Texas Dyslexia Handbook (English) (Spanish). We have programs that meet the need of every student that are provided by a therapist and are scientifically proven to work with our students with dyslexia.
Partnerships and Communication: We love working with parents and families to support students. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to participate in meetings and in collaboration with the dyslexia therapist on the campus on behalf of the student.
Accommodations: Students with dyslexia often need accommodations. Accommodations are determined in a Section 504 meeting or ARD meeting based on data for your individual student. We encourage parents to attend meetings and provide input! Accommodations must be followed and GISD has tremendous technology tools such as Don Johnston Snap&Read and Co:Writer.
