The IMS Connection
Volume 16, Issue 9: MAY 2021
Greetings Islip Families,
I hope this note finds you healthy and well. When I wrote my note to the community last May, I expressed that our teaching and learning community's health, safety, and emotional well-being was our paramount concern. While the world continues to make progress on battling the pandemic, the health and safety of all who enter Islip Middle School remains our priority.
As many of you are aware, there are still a great number of restrictions on our school community in regard to in person group events. The middle school, along with the other Islip Schools, are making adjustments to events so students can be recognized. Due to capacity restrictions currently in place, most of the IMS recognition events will be in a virtual manner. Details for specific events will come from the respective advisors. Please note, some of the calendar dates may change as we plan these events for virtual presentations to our audience.
We will make every attempt to provide you updates as this is not only an Islip challenge, but a statewide challenge in reference to school events. At this time, decisions are being made on a case-by-case basis.
Joining our newsletter distribution for the first time are our incoming 6th Grade Parents! On Tuesday, May 11th, at 7:00 pm all 5th grade students and parents are invited to attend our 5th to 6th grade orientation via ZOOM.
I want to continue to emphasize, should you have any questions or challenges, please contact me, Mr. Cohen, your child’s teacher, counselor, social worker, or psychologist. All of our contact information is available on the Middle School eBoard.
Thank you in advance for your understanding and support.
Wishing you good health and happiness,
Dr. Timothy P. Martin
Principal

Greetings IMS Families,
The April showers have passed, and it is time to welcome May. As we step outside there is no doubt that spring is upon us. The budding trees and flurry of chirping birds are bringing us warmer days and more sunshine.
It is hard to believe that there are only two months left in the school year. As we kick off the month of May there are many great things on the horizon, so please be patient as we plan new and creative ways to celebrate and recognize our students' many achievements while adhering to NYSDOH guidelines. This month we will be welcoming our incoming 6th graders with a virtual orientation, and our 8th graders will have similar experiences as we say goodbye and they prepare to move to the high school.
The advisory theme for the month of May is school spirit. School spirit is not just for the students, it is for our families, teachers, and the community. The past fourteen months have been difficult, and it has had a tremendous impact on our community. The students, staff, and community of Islip have stood together and faced the challenges together and for that I could not be prouder to be a part of the Islip Family.
Please check us out on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to view photos, videos, and news about amazing things going on at IMS. Our eBoard has up-to-date info on everything you need to navigate your time at IMS, but if any questions do arise, I invite you to reach out to me via e-mail at jcohen@islipufsd.org or call me directly at (631) 650-8515.
Regards,
Jason M. Cohen
Assistant Principal

Students in Mrs. DeSena’s Family and Consumer Science Classes participated in a collaborative Earth Day activity benefitting the Islip Animal Shelter. Students upcycled old-t-shirts donated by Islip Faculty into dog rope toys. Students worked in teams to create over 60 dog rope toys! Students enjoyed learning a new skill and simultaneously gave back to the community! Great job by all!
