A Video Game Review by Ryland Fain, 5th Grade, Mrs. Wolfe TA
Hello! Today I’m going to review one of my favorite Nintendo Switch games that I have been playing lately. The name of the game is Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. In this game, Mario and Rabbids have been surged together and it’s chaos! In the beginning, the goal isn’t quite clear, but after a mysterious scene reveals rabbids, players can start to see what’s happening. One of the rabbids zaps the others and they combine with resources near them, and so get sucked up by the washing machine into Mario’s world! Once things get started, players need to battle enemies from world to world. Along the way players will earn new weapons which will help you defeat all the big bosses! The best characters are in this game! All the favorites, like Mario, Luigi, and Peach! As you play you’ll get more characters with different abilities. The battles the characters have include moving around (kind of like chess), but only one character can move at a time. There are special attacks and you can meet more powerful enemies as your health increases and weapons are stronger. You’ll enjoy the cartoony graphics, just like in Super Mario Bros (even the music). The map looks a little busy at first with so much going on–even a giant toothbrush! You can play solo or even multiplayer. So if you want to have a great time and love Super Mario, then this is the game for you!

The Life of Taylor Alison Swift - By Addison Garibay, 6th Grade, Mrs. Kraggness
Taylor Alison Swift is an American singer-songwriter born on December 13th 1989. Her lucky number is 13 because she was born on the 13th, her first album went gold after 13 weeks, and her first number 1 song had a 13- second intro. Her grandmother was a professional opera singer, and she decided to follow in her footsteps in the music industry. At age 11 she sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” at a Philadelphia 76’ers basketball game. She began writing her own songs and playing the guitar at age 12. A great performance at The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville helped Taylor get a contract with Scot Borchetta’s Big Machine Records. In 2006 she released her first single “Tim McGraw” and it became a Top 10 Hit on the country charts. Taylor won the Horizon Award from the CMA ( Country Music Awards) and the ACM ( Academy of Country Music) for Top New Female Vocalist in 2007. It stayed there for 11 weeks! Taylor had become the highest-selling country artist of 2008. In 2009 Taylor won the MTV video music Awards Best Female video for “You Belong With Me”. Taylor was the first country music star to earn a VMA. When she won it stirred up some controversy with rapper Kanye West. Kanye leaped to the stage during Taylor’s speech, he took the microphone and said that Beyonce should have won Taylor’s award. After that Kanye later apologized to Taylor. In 2010 she became the artist to win the Grammy Award for the Album of the Year, for Fearless. In 2012 Taylor was ranked Forbes Magazine's high-paid celebrity under 30 beating out Justin Bieber, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga and earned $ 57 million. Easter - By Anabella Bisland, 5th Grade TA, Mrs. Wolfe’s Class
For Christians, Easter is a holiday honoring the resurrection of Jesus Christ celebrated on the first Sunday after the first Paschal full moon. This holiday is celebrated by dying eggs, eating candy, finding eggs, and more. But there are a lot of things about Easter you probably don’t know.
Americans spend a lot of money on candy every Easter. Every year, Americans spend about 1.9 billion dollars on candy, and 70% of the candy bought is chocolate! Speaking of chocolate, 76% of Americans think the ears of a chocolate bunny should be the first to be eaten? While Americans eat lots of chocolate during Easter, there are still a lot of other candies eaten. For example, did you know over 16 million jelly beans are eaten every Easter in America? Not to mention more than 700 million marshmallow peeps are purchased by Americans every Easter.
Candy is obviously popular around Easter time, but there are lots of other trendy traditions of Easter. One of the most popular traditions is decorating easter eggs. This tradition dates back to the 13th century. The eggs are a symbol of new life and the dye represents Christ’s blood.
All this talk about eggs and candy is making me hungry. Good thing there are lots of traditional Easter foods! There are so many, I can go on forever! So I’ll just name some of the most popular. A traditional Easter dinner includes ham, various side dishes, salads, and desserts. Popular side dishes include tender asparagus, sweet glazed carrots, potato gratin, roasted ham, and homemade biscuits. While typical Easter desserts feature carrot cake, Easter cookies, cupcakes, rice krispies, and of course, candy.
While the first Easter dates back to the 2nd century, we still celebrate it today. As well as many traditions that have developed throughout the years which still help celebrate this time of year. Have a great Easter!
Frogs - By Evan Frauenthal, 5th Grade TA, Mrs. Wolfe’s Class
Frogs are amazing creatures, they go on land, water, and even the sky! Frogs can be many different shapes, sizes, and colors. Some climb, some swim, some will jump on your face if they feel like it. Also I’m talking about frogs not toads, there’s a difference between a frog, and a toad. Toads have rough and bumpy skin while frogs have smooth skin, toads hop, frogs jump, in fact, tree frogs can jump up to 7 feet, that's 50 times the size of an average frog, many other frogs can jump 20 times the length of their own body length. Toads would really rather walk than hop. There are 4810 known species of frogs in the world! That's a lot of frogs. The biggest frog in the world is the Goliath Frog. The Goliath Frog lives in the western Africa and grows up to 12.5 inches and 7.2 pounds! That’s a big frog! This species of frog is endangered because of its size to make frog legs.

Leader in Me by Mrs. Monday & Her 3rd Grade Class
Verrado Heritage Elementary School is a Leader in Me school. This means that leadership is a huge part of our school. We are also now a Lighthouse school and we can help lead the way for others. So, what is Leader in Me? Leader in Me is a process of becoming a leader in our school, in our community, and in life. There are seven habits that everyone learns in order to become a leader here at VHES.
The first habit is habit one, Be Proactive. This habit means you are in charge of what you say and do. To show this habit you choose to do the right thing when nobody's watching. This first habit is important because you choose to stay in control of yourself. Next is habit two, Begin with the End in Mind. Habit two means to have a plan before you do something and have goals for yourself. An example of habit two is to make a plan and follow it step by step. You wouldn’t want to take a trip without knowing where you were going and you would want to pack the right things so Habit two teaches you how to go step by step. If we didn't have a plan it could be a big mess.
The third habit is habit three, Put First Things First. When you Put First Things First you do your important things first and then you can play. Some examples to show this habit are to make a plan every week and see when you have sports practice and when you have time to play. Another example is to do your homework first and then play video games. This habit is important because you can get your work done and then you will have time to do what you want to do.
The fourth habit is Think Win-Win. Habit four means that everyone can win. You don’t always have to win, sometimes you can play a game for fun but when you play everyone can win because you learn from your mistakes. It is important to know that if you lose you can practice and then just try again later.
Habit five is Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood. Habit five means to listen to the person that is talking to you before you speak. Habit five can lead to exciting things, because if you really listen you might hear things you may have not thought of before. This is an important habit because you can tell how others are feeling if you just listen to them with your eyes, ears and heart.
Near the end is Habit six, Synergize. This habit means being together is better and to value people’s ideas and differences. You can show this habit by helping and making new ideas with people. It is important to live habit six because teamwork makes the dream work and you can get things done faster or better than if you were alone.
Finally, there is Habit seven, Sharpen the Saw. Sharpen the Saw means to keep balance with your mind, body, heart and spirit. Some ways you can stay balanced are to eat healthy, keep learning, have a positive attitude, and spend time with those you love. This habit is important because you are the saw and if you don’t stay sharp you can’t do your best.
Here at Verrado Heritage Elementary School we all live the seven habits. Each habit is important and it takes practice to get better at all of them. This is what we do here at VHES but you can practice and live the habits too! Be a leader that others want to follow and have a HEROtastic day!
Online vs. In-Person Learning - By Nora Davis, 8th Grade, Ms. Hazelett
Unaided learning. Stress. Fallback. These are just some of the negative impacts of online learning. Online learning is a style of learning centered around the internet. Students who participate in online learning are not physically present in the classroom and communicate with their educators electronically. The pandemic has resulted in many students transitioning to this style of learning. Controversy has arisen around the question: Does online learning benefit or disadvantage students? As research and student surveys show, the style of online learning results in students experiencing significant academic fallback.
Evidence shows students of all backgrounds have had less academic growth during the 2020-2021 school year. Failing to comprehend school content and not receiving enough teacher aid are just two reasons students report having less academic growth. Without a teacher in the classroom, students have a more challenging time reaching out for help and utilizing their support. Students were taught face-to-face with hands-on experiences until the online transition took place. This switch in learning style may set students back as they are adjusting.
A study conducted by Dr. Joyce Schienders and Dr. Rael Moore reveals two-thirds of students reported experiencing educational challenges during the time of online learning. This study lets us realize that most students admit to bearing academic difficulties.
Students of certain ethnicities and financial backgrounds experienced the most significant gaps in educational growth. According to the article "Remote Learning Isn't Just for Emergencies," "...low-income, Black, and Latino students saw the largest gaps in learning growth and disproportionately stayed in fully remote instruction compared with white students" While all students experienced decreased growth in school, it is essential to note that students of certain races and financial background are especially struggling, proving that online learning is not their most effective learning style.
Both national and state studies indicate students of all backgrounds experienced reduced educational development during this previous school year. Students need a learning style that benefits them academically, and online learning has proven not to be that style. The online education option is one many students don't have the resources for. A report issued by American College Testing (ACT) highlights the high percentage of students lacking the assets necessary for this learning style. "Almost half of those students surveyed said they had limited technology and one third had limited access to the internet. One-quarter of low-income students, and 18% of first-generation students, reported struggling with access to both." This report allows people to realize that many students are not yet eligible to transition to digital education, yet many were obligated to utilize it regardless.
The same ACT report also uncovers that most students do not have the privilege of "good" technology and the internet. "The ACT report shows just how many students struggled with unreliable or unavailable technology. Only 38% of students said their computer was always reliable. Only 24% of students said their internet connection was 'great.' For the remaining students, over half said their computers were unreliable, were frequently troublesome, or had no access at all to a computer. Twenty-one percent (21%) described their internet service as 'unpredictable,' or 'terrible,' or had no internet at all." This evidence reveals that a great majority of 62% don't have completely reliable computers, and 76% percent didn’t have "great internet." When most students struggle with an issue, it undoubtedly needs to be addressed. Finding a way to transition to online learning would also need to include providing students with the necessary resources.
Students can utilize digital learning as a beneficial tool that is a more personalized and flexible learning option. A national survey brought the positive outlook and good results that parents and educators are adapting and observing. "About 75 percent of parents reported an increased preference for online courses, while 64 percent noted adopting a "positive opinion" on digital learning, coinciding with a growing demand for virtual learning options throughout the country. "About 70 percent of surveyed educators expected improvements in student engagement and attendance moving forward as schools take a more organized approach to digital learning models and policies."
As we all have probably realized, students have numerous preferred learning styles. No two students are the same; therefore, no two students will benefit or face disadvantages from the same learning style. Undoubtedly, online learning can be a more personalized and flexible learning option. Yet, we have to consider the majority and accessibility in this case. With two-thirds of students reporting academic fallback during digital learning and 62% of students not having reliable computers, online learning is a style many students struggle with.
Fictional Story: My Home Planet ED-25 by Vivienne Hanson
Hello! I am Vivienne Hanson, and I am an alien. That’s right, and I come from the faraway planet of ED-25! The “ED” stands for education, because I love school. Here is a description of my planet: An Earth-sized planet that is covered in freshwater oceans and one island the size of Canda, if the islands were combined into the land mass. The core is made of water as well, and we have a thick layer of dirt called Celium, which can grow any plant and never runs out of nutrients. Our atmosphere is very thick because we live near a supergiant star, so sadly no stargazing here. And that is what the planet looks like! Now here is our way of life. Instead of homes, we live in schools, and learn every day. We eat rainbowberries, which can taste like anything on Earth. Plus, rainbowberries give us all the nutrients we need. Our favorite game to play is wave jump, where one person controls how high the waves go (yes we can do that) and the others try to jump over them. We have lower gravity than you Earthlings do, so jumping waves is easier. Finally, I should give you a little backstory. We lived on Earth in the 1700’s, when George Washington was around. When he became president, he thought we were too weird to continue living in America. With nowhere else we felt like going, we built a rocket and flew through the cosmos, finding ED-25. We visit Earth so we can help the lives of others. Thank you for reading, and please don’t expose me to Area-51!

The Burning Lights by Arlie Hettel, 6th Grade, Mrs. Reinhardt
When I was little me and my brother would watch people go on adventures in the woods, and we would imagine that we were there.
Imagining the birds flying above our heads, walking through the trees, and just being able to breathe and not have anyone to worry about.
Imagine one day you're walking in the woods and see some bright lights.
You may think there are street lights, but then you come closer, and closer, and closer. Then you see… a fire.
“I survived because the fire inside me burned brighter than the fire around me” Joshua Graham.
Welcome back today it is March 17,2020. Also known as the best month, haha. It is 4:28 pm ET.
On August 18, Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency, and on August 19, 2020, reported that the state was battling 367 known fires … Here's what we know so far,
“*Date(s): February 15–December 31, 2020
*Total fires: 9,917
*Total area: 4,397,809 acres (1,779,730 ha)
*Cost: >$12.079 billion to fix the damage” (Earthobservatory)
California fire data shows that since the beginning of the year, more than 8,100 wildfires have moved through over 3.9 million acres across the state.
On Thursday Oct 1 2020, more than 96,000 residents were evacuated and 30 people have died in, or as a result of, the fires. Fires have consumed more than 7,500 structures to-date.
“The debate is over around climate change," Gov. Gavin Newsom said in September. "Just come to the state of California, observe it with your own eyes."
California had the hottest days they had had in a while.Record-breaking temperatures, drought, and 14,000 dry lightning strikes in three days, resulting in a round of fires that quickly grew, stretching firefighting resources thin.
Furthermore, California relied on firefighters. Firefighting crews were smaller than usual due to the state sending many people home, and many had to quit their job because of COVID 19. Others had caught the virus and their crew was quarantined.
“When you say 9 out of 10 forest fires are created by humans, all I hear is there's a bear out there who knows how to use matches” (Quote Master).
Here's what caused the top 5 California fires.

There is not much more news for this week, many people ask if the fires are still going on in 2021 and 2022.
The 2021 California wildfire season was a series of wildfires that burned across the state of California. By the end of 2021 a total of 8,835 fires were recorded, burning 2,568,948 acres (1,039,616 ha) across the state.
All we know is that fires are like rumors they start fast and spread quickly and can hurt others.
All my resources came from google and California Wildfire – The New York Times.
I hope you learned some more education on this fire.
Come back next week for more information.

Frozen Strawberries (any amount you want)

Blender
So first you’ll pour the strawberries into the blender, then add the lemonade. Next on the blender use the ice crusher setting and blend the strawberries up!
