2nd Grade March News
Library Media
During the month of March, 2nd grade students are wrapping up their research projects with Mrs. Flannery. Each class chose a topic they would like to explore. Examples ranged from what is a tsunami? to what is a black hole? to why do ladybugs have spots? Students worked as a class to plan their research; gather information from PebbleGo and MyOn; and finally created a Voicethread (or are in the process of creating) to communicate what they have learned. Voicethreads will be shared with all second grade classes, so we can learn from each other!
With Mrs. Hill, students have participated in the following read alouds:
Lulu's Mysterious Misson by Judith Viorst
Super Happy Party Bears by Marcie Colleen
Hotel Bruce by Ryan T. Higgins
We would also like to send out a special thanks to everyone for supporting the spring book fair!
If you have any questions in regards to your child’s library experience. Please don’t hesitate to contact us or locate more information on the library webpage.

Art
With Ms. Pinto, the second grade students are wrapping up their non-fiction books, and are at different phases of completing their realistic clay animal sculptures to go with their books. We have spent so much time on making our books, writing and illustrations neat, detailed, and well written.
We can’t wait to share our two-part masterpieces with you during our very own upcoming art exhibit at our Library! More information to come of that soon.

Music
In March, second grade students continued to add to their “music staircase” by learning the new note, “re” (pronounced ray). Students have practiced reading, writing, and singing re in various songs, both new and old. One of our newest songs is called “Closet Key”. Students enjoyed being sneaky as they played the closet key guessing game! Students also listened to a section “Carnival of the Animals” by Camille Saint-Saëns. They listened to “The Cuckoo” and wrote about their reactions.
Some classes also celebrated Music in our Schools Month with a special project. Some classes designed instruments of the future, named them and tried to convince their class to “buy” their new instrument. Others made posters about the importance of music in their lives to hang around the school. Some samples can be seen below!
Recently, some second grade students got the privilege of participating in a master class with Bolokada Conde, a master drummer from Guinea, West Africa. Aside from the school-wide assemblies that took place, second and third grade students were selected by their teachers to participate in this class. It was wonderful to watch the students enjoying and learning so much! See the pictures below. Please feel free to email with comments or questions at any time!

Physical Education
During the first two weeks of February, we finished our beach ball unit with the children. The remainder of the month station centers were set-up, where the children
rotated from one activity to another. Stations included badminton, shuffle board and fitness lab. We often use stations with our P.E. units. We think it is a very effective way
to teach skills and the children really like the variety of activities.
Badminton was a new activity for the children. It is excellent for hand-eye coordination. First week, the children had a difficult time volleying the birdie back and forth. By the second week, their skill improved and so did the volleys. The children really enjoyed the challenge of the activity. They also continued to work on their fitness, muscle strength, flexibility and endurance. You would be very impressed with your child’s improvement in all areas of Physical Education.
