TOPS 5th Grade Weekly Newsletter

Monday, February 18th is a staff and student holiday. Please enjoy time with your family and friends.

I hope you had a fabulous week! Before we all take off for the weekend, I wanted to send out an overview of what to expect next week, some resources to help you, and a fun riddle!

Preparing for next week:

Please make sure you go through the grade book and make up any Ms. If you have any grades that are lower than you would like, please work through the lesson again to improve your grade. Remember you can take your TGAs multiple times (this is a great way to expand your comprehension, practice your skills, and increase your grade). If you have any questions or need help checking the grade book, please let me know.

Literature assignments on the Daily Plan

On your Daily Plan once you complete the open Literature unit, it will list your Literature assignment as the 19. You Need To Make A Choice unit. please DO NOT do this unit. We will do our Novel Units later in the year. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Literature (9) Unit 8 Stories of Washington Irving Lesson 1-7 January 28-February 8-Completed

Literature (10) Unit 9 Passing Moments Lesson 1-5 February 12-22

*After you complete Unit (10) Unit 9 in Literature please do not move on.

Join the GREEN TEAM!! Your report in Math Facts Pro shows all the facts you have memorized (quick recall) in green. Let's make all of your facts green. I already have 2 students who are on the GREEN TEAM. The week after we return from Spring Break, week of March 18th, we will have something special for those students who are on the GREEN TEAM and know all of their multiplication facts.

Looking Back -

We wrapped up our unit on electricity and magnetism with a look at electromagnets and the many ways that they are used in modern devices. This helps us to see how electrical energy has become a critical need for everyday uses. This was a complex but essential area of scientific knowledge.

Looking Ahead –

We now turn our attention to the physical forces that are governed by Newton’s laws and that extend into so much of our daily observations. Why do things go? Why do they slow down? Why do they change direction? We will have many opportunities to play and experiment with these ideas.

Extra Credit is available in USA Test Prep. Check it out!

There are short science articles linked in USA Test Prep with some short essay questions to explore your thinking about the topics. Complete these optional assignments for a boost to your grade.

Continue to devote one hour (or two 30 minute sessions) to Stride Science lessons each week.

Science News for the Week: We’ve all seen two hockey players collide on the ice. What does this collision have to do with physics? Watch this video to see how some world class physicists study Newton’s laws of motion in this super-fast sport.

Hello 5th graders,

This is the week we will begin unit 6 – Civil War Times. During class on Wednesday, February 20th, we will learn about the Underground Railroad and the important abolitionists and what they are known for.

Please complete these 3 lessons this week:

• Lesson 1: Regional Disagreements
• Lesson 2: Slavery and the Union
• Lesson 3: The Union Breaks Apart

I’ll see you in class on Wednesday!

Every week you will check the grade level newsletter to see which Music Studio lessons to complete. Just open Unit 1, Lesson 1 in the OLS and click the link to take you to Music Studio! (This is why everything in the OLS for Music EXCEPT for Unit 1, Lesson 1 has been marked skipped.)

I update the gradebook on Friday afternoons. Check the gradebook on Monday morning to see your updated Music grade.
