News from Mrs. Thode
Happy October to you all. Thank you for your patience as they were working on the driveway and sidewalk at the southwest portion of the parking lot.
Literacy
Students are working to build their stamina in many areas of their literacy work at school They are working on reading, writing, word work, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, phonics and phonemic awareness. Ask your child how long their class has built their reading stamina to this week. You will be amazed at their progress.
Math:
Students are working on building their math fact strategies and learning math concepts. Students will also be using small groups during math.
Conferences October 23 and 24:
Parent teacher conferences are on Monday, October 24 from 8:00am to 8:00pm and Tuesday, October 24 from 3:40pm to 6:20pm. There is no school on Monday, October 24 and Friday, October 27 due to conferences. We look forward to seeing you so that we can tell you all the good things that your child is doing at school.
Attendance Matters:
Did you know that the Sioux City Community Schools has set the goal to have all students at school 95% of the time? That means that in one school year, students should miss nine or less days. If your child is missing more than five days, teachers will call and see if there is anything they can do to help. We want your child at school so they can learn and grow. We want to work with you so that your child can be in school as many days as possible. At conferences, we will talk to you a bit more about this. Our slogan at school is "Less than Nine and You will Shine!"
Questions:
Please call the office if you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to working with you all this school year.

Bullying and Harassment Free District
The District is committed to providing all students with a safe learning environment in which everyone is treated with dignity and respect. The District’s Anti-Bullying, Harassment, and Hazing policy defines bullying and harassment as well as the procedures for reporting and investigating bullying or harassment complaints.
Bullying and harassment are defined as any electronic, written, verbal, or physical act or conduct toward a student which is based on any actual or perceived trait or characteristic of the student and which creates an objectively hostile school environment that meets one or more of the following conditions:
- Places the student in reasonable fear of harm to the student’s person or property.
- Has a substantially detrimental effect on the student’s physical or mental health.
- Has the effect of substantially interfering with a student’s academic performance.
- Has the effect of substantially interfering with the student’s ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by a school.
If your student feels they are being bullied or harassed, encourage your student to visit with the student involved and tell them to stop. They should also tell a teacher, principal, or trusted adult at their school. An online discrimination, bullying, harassment, and hazing complaint form is also available on the District’s website and may be completed by the student, parent, or school employee.
Fall Conferences – No School Days
Parent/teacher conferences will be held on Monday, October 23 and Tuesday, October 24. There will be no school for students on Monday, October 23 and Friday, October 27.

Advocate for Our Schools
Parent volunteers are needed to join the District’s Grassroots Advocacy Committee. As a volunteer, you will receive email updates about important legislative events that could impact public education and be asked to contact our legislators to advocate for our schools. Tips are provided to help volunteers connect with legislators. Volunteer today and let your voice be heard!
Contact Communications@live.siouxcityschools.com to volunteer.
School Safety
The safety of our students and staff is paramount. The District uses Standard Response Protocol or common terms to communicate our action and response to an emergency situation. The terms Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter are used so students, staff, and first responders understand the situation and how best to respond.
We encourage families to become familiar with these terms to better understand our school’s response and what to expect in a crisis situation. For more information on safety preparedness within the District, visit siouxcityschools.org.
