Spring ACT is April 2!

Students need to be on time for school and need to bring an ACT approved calculator, several No.2 pencils, and photo ID. Students will be dismissed from school after the testing (approx. 11:45 to 12:00). Buses will run at the regular dismissal time (3:06), and lunch will be served as needed.

Seniors are encouraged to schedule college visits for the ACT testing day, as everyone else will be testing.

ACT electronics policy: No cell phones or other electronic devices Including Apple watches are allowed in the testing room.

On Wednesday, March 27, we will offer our last ACT Prep session from 2:00-2:45 in the Amphitheatre. We will focus on test-taking strategies in for each of the four tests.

Beginning Wednesday, March 27th, payments can be made on AP exam balances in the Main Office during lunch or after school. Payments will be accepted every Wednesday until April 26th, when the balance must be paid in FULL.

Have you started thinking about college? For students who want to serve their country in the military AND get a tuition-free first class education, a U.S. Service Academy may be the right fit. Academy graduates receive a bachelor’s degree in their field of study and become commissioned Officers in their respective branch of service. Think you’ve got what it takes? All Juniors and Seniors are invited to attend Prom 2019, Living Behind the Mask: a Met Gala on Saturday April 27th at 7:30-11:30 in the Wildcat Arena. ( Please make the time prominent. We mistakenly posted 7pm on our Save the Dates)

Tickets to Prom 2019, Living Behind the Mask: a Met Gala, will be on Pre-Order March 27th-29th and April 2nd-5th in the Arena Kiosk during 5th period at the pre-order cost of $30 for singles and $60 for couples. Tickets will be on sale April 22nd -25th during 5th period at the price of $40 for singles and $80 for couples. Tickets WILL NOT be sold Friday April 26th or Saturday April 27th. All tickets are NON-TRANSFERABLE and NON-REFUNDABLE,

If your date is not a current ORHS student you must complete a Guest Application form found in Student Affairs or with Ms. Eidam in LC 313. All forms must be completed and turned in with a copy of the guest’s ID to Student Services by April 24th. (Connie is going to send me a digital copy of the form and I will send it to you for you to include if you would like to.)

The calendars for 2019-20 and 2020-21 have been amended to end school prior to the Memorial Day holiday! Please consult these calendars when planning family vacations! Thanks.

AVID 9 and 10 students are headed to MTSU on Thursday, March 28th. Please return signed field trip forms to your Elective Teacher ASAP.

Student Council’s Flea Market starts March 2 and runs through the end of October. The flea market is held in the parking lot on the turnpike side. It is every Saturday from 7 am to 1 pm. The items to sale set up fee are $5.00 each month for tax registration and $12.00 for three parking spaces. Proceeds support Student Council and clubs. Ethan Brady won 2nd place and Steven Qu won 3rd place at the Tennessee Junior Science and Humanities Symposium held on March 1, 2019. Ethan Brady, son of Tina and Michael Brady, presented his work simulating the eating behavior of black soldier fly larvae using a genetic algorithm and agent-based modeling. Ethan and his research partner, Eagle Yuan, worked with Dr. Miguel Fuentes-Cabrera at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Steven Qu and his research partner, Bill Andress, worked with Dr. Christopher Symons at ORNL. Steven and Bill developed a Cancer Detecting Neural Network (CDNN) that is able to detect multiple cancers from an economical and noninvasive blood test. Steven is the son of Jun Qu and Ye Sun.

Henry Shen, son of Lei Cao and Jian Shen, placed second in a separate poster competition at TJSHS. His research is focused on using computer simulations and machine learning to show stable binding states between a small molecule and disordered protein. This discovery is a step towards drug development for conditions involving disordered proteins. Henry worked with Dr. Arvind Ramanathan at ORNL. All students were placed at ORNL through the Math Thesis course at Oak Ridge High School

The cadets of Oak Ridge HS NJROTC hosted a drill competition on Thursday, March 7 in Wildcat Arena. The meet consisted of a personnel inspection, armed drill, unarmed drill, color guard and an air rifle shoot. The Wildcat Company, led by senior and Cadet Commanding Officer Rhiannon Lucas, competed against Anderson County, Central, Fulton, Farragut, Bearden and West High School's NJROTC units. The competition was very tough, but it was the cadets of the Wildcat Company edging out the Rebels from West High School for overall 1st place. The Oak Ridge cadets regain the top spot in the Knox County NJROTC league. Next up for the Wildcat Company is to defend their title as the Knox County NJROTC Athletic Champions on Friday, April 12 at Fulton High School.

Congratulations to Alex Dahl, Reina Coffee, Lizzy Paul and Maggie Froning who had their work accepted into the Dogwood Student Art Show. The maximum number of pieces any school can submit for selection is four, and all of ORHS pieces were accepted! Alex Dahl won first place for 9th Grade. The opening of the show at the Clayton Center at Maryville College was March 15 and will run through the end of the month. (Maggie Froning to RT)

Jada Guinn may not have been selected as Ms. TN Basketball; however, the impact Jada has made on the Lady Wildcats during her high school career has been very impressive! We wish Jada the very best as she becomes a TN Tech Golden Eagle! However, she will always be a Wildcat in our book!

Wildcat and Lady Wildcat tennis teams hit the ground running their first week back from spring break with three home matches. They face strong teams from Hardin Valley Academy on Tuesday, Grace Christian Academy on Thursday, and Maryville on Friday. Students are encouraged to drop by the courts anytime between 4-7:00 PM all three days to support the ORHS competitors.

Woodland Needs Spring Fling Volunteers

Need volunteer hours for the Tennessee Promise? Here is a fun opportunity to get your hours. You can earn up to 4 hours by helping to set up activities, play games with our students, and take down activities during our Spring Fling.
