FCS Classes
Santa's merry, little elves have nothing on the students from Sargent Central that are in the FCS department. We are always busy working on projects for our school, our community, or our own personal knowledge.
As you read this article (and the newsletter), you can see how busy we are each day. Our "elves" are always working and we have a new refrigerator/freezer to keep our foods in, thanks to the SE Regional Tech Center and Mr. Spellerberg. We have received a grant for beef (ND Beef Commission) and another one for flour (Dakota Maid Flour), so we have some supplies to use during the upcoming year.
We are always looking for new ideas and projects so if you know of a "need", we may be able to help.
From our beautiful workshop in the high school building to you and your family....Happy Holidays!
FCS 8 continues to "shine" as these young elves are the most energetic of all my students so far. They made the most beautiful pies in November and their sewing project (pillows) really knocked it out of the North Pole. They are helpful and run the Honor Market each morning, selling treats to their fellow classmates. They also helped bake for the Veteran's Day program in November.
The Financial Literacy class is learning to plan and organize a "virtual" special event for their future. The life event project includes planning a theme, date, and location of the event. They begin to decide on the guest list, write a sample invitation, and include the foods and beverages they would serve. Part of the project requires they keep a total list of the expenses. Their ideas are compiled in a small book and will be shared with the class. As seniors, they soon realize the cost of throwing a "big bash" for friends and family can get really expensive.
The Foods class also made the majority of the treats for the Veteran's Day program. They enjoyed baking cookies and bars and realized that some of them were better at frosting cupcakes while others were good at decorating them. Their upcoming project will be to make "12 Days of Christmas" daily treats for the teachers and support staff, leading up to our holiday break. Our students love to bake or cook for school or community projects.
The interior design class has been busy designing a nursery for a "virtual" family. They made a project board with pictures of all the items and furniture you would put in a nursery on it. They kept a total of the expenses on the back of the project board and they were surprised at how much a little "bundle of joy" costs an average family. The class is always looking to improve their skills at making a house a home. Later this month, we will be designing the Christmas decorations for the exterior of a "virtual" home. Once again, they will have to keep a total of the expenses needed to do this design.
Our freshmen class has designed and created "single shade aesthetic" pictures that have been framed and placed on the "Wall of Fame" outside the classroom door. Students compete to get their design projects on the "Wall" so other students can see their work. The "Wall" also encourages other students to take FCS classes and showcase their talents.
