GPS District Digest

The 2020 Scholastic Art and Writing Award winners were recently announced, and among those named were seven Greenwich High School students, recognized for their work in art, ceramics and glass, photography, mixed media, and film and animation.

These students submitted their work to the Connecticut Art Region competition for consideration. Student artwork is then juried by professional artists and university art faculty and is selected on merit for inclusion in a state-wide art exhibition held at the Hartford Art School. These students who were awarded Honorable Mentions and Silver Key awards are also eligible to attend The Connecticut Regional Arts Award Celebration.

Greenwich High School Visual Arts Teacher Sheyda Ardalan said, “Our students used various two-dimensional and three-dimensional materials to visualize their ideas and express their thoughts, pushing the boundaries of their creative and cognitive competencies. Their work represented a vast range of superior ability in material use combined with highly developed creative thought process. The entire Art Department is very proud of our students.”

Western is proud to be an AVID Schoolwide building. AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, incorporates the teaching of executive functioning skills, fostering of leadership traits, and the acquisition of ‘college going’ knowledge into the core curriculum. Western Middle School Principal Gordon Beinstein said, "AVID has become the lens we look through when revisiting our grading practices and mission statement, how we recognize student achievement and even how we place students into classes. Those are the particulars and the tangible aspects of the AVID program. But AVID Schoolwide, when done well, permeates a building. The staff pushed for AVID as our theme because they saw the benefits for those students in the AVID elective classes and because they saw the value in the implementation of the AVID instructional strategies in their classrooms. Students at Western continue to thrive, academically, socially and emotionally. I attribute this growth primarily to our outstanding staff but also to AVID for providing the framework, the strategies, and the mindset that fosters the belief that ALL children can achieve at high levels."

Save the date! On January 22, 2020, the Greenwich High School PTA will sponsor its annual "SUMMERFARE" in the GHS Student Center from 6:00 - 8:00pm. It's an event that focuses on summer activities, camps, and employment for kids and teens. The event will draw close to 100 vendors and last year nearly 500 community members attended. The event will have a wealth of information for students and families, and all are encouraged to attend!

GHS Soil Remediation

Yesterday, an overview of the Phase I Remedial Action Plan was presented for Greenwich High School Fields 6 & 7. The presentation shared details about the background of this project and proposed remediation. Members of the public were also invited to share public comment and ask questions. If you are interested in submitting comments, public comment will end on February 1.

Cardinal Stadium Project

At this evening's Board of Education Business Meeting taking place at the International School of Dundee, starting at 7:00pm, the Cardinal Stadium Project is on the action agenda for vote, based on the details of the proposed updates to the stadium shared at a previous meeting.
