Waikīkī School Parent Bulletin - August 6, 2021
Message from Principal Kusuda
We continue to ask that if your child is not feeling well to keep them at home. If your child is running a fever, please understand that the guidance states that he or she needs to be fever-free/symptom free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication. Daily symptom screening before coming to school makes a huge difference in keeping our entire school community safe. Thank you for your continued support!
Have a Wonderful Weekend,
Mr. Kusuda
City Resolution Regarding Leahi Avenue Road Ownership
City Council Chair Tommy Waters released a statement on Thursday, August 5, 2021 regarding Leahi Avenue. The text of his statement is listed below.
Aloha mai kākou,
I am reaching out to you to inform you that I have introduced Resolution 21-175, which requests that the Mayor and his Administration take the necessary steps to acquire the privately-owned section of Lēʻahi Avenue between Monsarrat Avenue and Noela Street in the best interest of public safety.
I want to extend a very warm mahalo for your engagement with our office around the safety of your community and the recent changes to Lēʻahi Avenue. The private ownership and kuleana of Lēʻahi Avenue have created many different challenges for the community over the years, and I hear clearly the concerns that have been raised over traffic and pedestrian safety, accessibility of the roadway.
I believe that as a community, we all agree we want to ensure that our neighborhood roads are properly maintained and function safely for all who live in and pass through the area, especially for our keiki. It has always been the hope of all stakeholders that the City would eventually take ownership of the private portion of Lēʻahi Avenue.
The City taking ownership of a private roadway is the decision of the Mayor and the Executive branch, and our past efforts requesting that the administration accept transfer of this portion of Lēʻahi Avenue have been unsuccessful. I continue to believe that the safety concerns present, including but not limited to, access for first responders and the close proximity of Waikiki Elementary School, warrant unique action here.
If this issue is important to you, please consider submitting testimony on Resolution 21-175 and share your perspective and experiences with the Mayor’s office at 768-4141 or rick.blangiardi@honolulu.gov.
Mahalo to you all for continuing to care so deeply about the safety of our community.
