Halloween Edition
Dear Charles Town Families
It's an exciting time of year and we have another spirit week sponsored by our PTO! We are looking forward to see all the great outfits our students come up with this week.
Report cards came home today and we are very proud of how hard all of our Panther students have been working hard these last 10 weeks.
Don't forget this week, we also have our Parent Teacher Conferences on Tuesday, October 25 from 6:00-8:00 and look forward to seeing you that evening. We will honor drop in meetings with the teachers, however, to maximize your time, we do ask that you schedule a meeting via Canvas with the teacher.
Ms. Reed
School Pictures
Students will have their school pictures taken during SOCIAL STUDIES classes on 10/26 or 10/27. Please use the schedule below to determine when your students pictures will be taken.
- 10/26: Plank, Eddy, Agunsday, Meadows, Daly, Baker
- 10/27: Moody, Lannon, Green, Make-Ups from 10/26
Costumes at School - 10/31/22
Students are welcome to wear their costumes to school on Monday 10/31. Please keep in mind the following building guidelines: We ask that children NOT wear costumes depicting violence or violent acts. This includes fake blood, gore or imagery that would not be "G rated". Masks or full face paint are not allowed- we must be able to identify your student.
Please leave all toy guns, knives and swords at home. Reserve elaborate costumes, face paint and make-up for trick or treating as these things can create a learning distraction.
Halloween is an exciting time. Let's all help to make sure it is a safe and positive experience for the children while at school. Thank you for your support with these guidelines.
Useful tips from school counselors - Ms. Mills and Mr. Wilson
How much sleep does your middle schooler need?
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has recommended that children aged 6-12 years should regularly sleep 9-12 hours per night, and teenagers aged 13-18 years should sleep 8-10 hours.
Please make sure your student is getting the sleep they need to stay healthy and be able to do their best!

After School Tutoring Options
CTMS will be offering after school tutoring opportunities to students who received a D or F in either Math, English, Reading, Science, and/or Social Studies during the first 9-weeks.
Within the next week, a CTMS administrator will be calling to touch base with parents of students who would benefit from after school tutoring.
We will be working with JCS Transportation to offer a secondary bus run for students who would be attending the twice a week tutoring sessions.
Specific details will follow to those parents whose students qualify for tutoring.

Sprouting Wings update from Mr. Green
Louisa Jaggar (2021) promotes, “It is a great tragedy that prejudice ultimately cost Banning his life”, in her book entitled Sprouting Wings. Her statement illuminates the amazing triumph and equally tragic sadness in the life of one of America’s first Black Aviators, James Herman Banning. Jaggar includes her narrative as a portion of the educational series, America’s Greatest Stories Never Told, along with co-author Shari Becker. The actors portrayed historically significant Black additions to the American story by regaling tragedy, success, and reward as the air-partners struggles repeatedly “On Golden Wings” across the continent; named aptly for the contributions used from private citizens to fund the flying adventure. Each donator’s signature received their rightful place on either side of the vessel marking their role in this historic event. “Traveling for twenty-one days with the help of twenty-four communities. They had used 410 gallons of gas and spent 150 dollars to fly 3,300 miles to the other side of the country” (Jaggar, 2021). A remarkable feat, on any level, considering the post-depression America and often highly racially charged time period in which Banning and his flying mechanic chose to face!
