Steven Kellogg
Steven Kellogg is an author/illustrator known for combining engaging text with detailed, energetic illustrations in order to make great story-telling. He is currently a vice-president of the National Children's Book and Literacy Alliance, and he will be at UNI for the The 45th Annual Elementary Literacy Conference and the Iowa Reading Recovery Conference on Friday, April 19th, at the Schindler Education Center. In celebration, we're pulling some of our favorite Kellogg books, so if you haven't been introduced to his work, now is a great time to get acquainted. And if you're old friends, now is a great time to catch up. Check out our Steven Kellogg display in one of the blue boxes in the Youth Collection!
Holocaust Remembrance Day
There are many remembrance days dedicated to commemorating the victims and survivors of the Holocaust, both in the U.S. and elsewhere. This year, Holocaust Remembrance Day is Monday, April 8th. In honor of this, the Youth Collection is pulling materials that best help us to understand the impact the Holocaust had on the world and to remember the lives it affected. Help us observe this special day by exploring the books on display in the blue boxes in the Youth Collection.
Shakespeare
Though we can't be sure of his birth date, it is generally accepted that Shakespeare was born on April 23rd in 1564. Fifty-two years later, he also died on April 23rd. Whether you love him, hate him, or are just confused by him, there's no denying the influence Shakespeare's work has had on literature, theatre, film, and the English language as a whole. His plays and other writings have been remade several times over in the form of books, musicals, movies, television, etc. So, we've pulled unique adaptations and other fascinating materials about Shakespeare and his life and writing. Drop by the Youth Collection and check them out!
Gardens
It's been a long, cold winter, but in the Youth Collection we're bringing in the spring with our display on gardens! Colorful, bountiful, and functional, gardens can inspire creativity and encourage sustainability, collaboration, and learning. These books can be used across the curriculum. Check out some of the awesome books we have on display behind the reference desk in the Youth Collection and you're good to go!
