Curriculum Corner
Hello Oak Grove Community,
Just a friendly reminder that during the dates of Monday, March 5th-Wednesday, March 7, students in grades 3 and 5 will be taking the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test). This is a three part test that assesses a student's Quantitative, Verbal and Nonverbal aptitude.
There are multiple uses of the CogAT at Oak Grove School. CogAT scores can assist teachers with planning instruction and support opportunities for differentiation in the classroom. In addition, the scores from this assessment will help determine students who are eligible for the Talented And Gifted program (TAG) in math and English language arts. All students, including 5th graders currently in the TAG program, are reviewed for placement. Please, see the link below for the TAG Handbook, which outlines additional information about the TAG program.
In addition to the CogAT, other scores that are reviewed for TAG placement include: STAR, a math problem solving assessment, teacher recommendations and a writing sample, which are administered based on the CogAT results. Please, see page 10 of the TAG Handbook for additional details.
Scores from the CogAT will be made available to parents after the district receives them from the scoring company.
Thank you for your help. If you have any additional questions, please contact Michelle Jackson, at jackson@ogschool.org.

Gala ’18 – What a Night!
Thank you to our attendees, sponsors, donors and volunteers for making the Grove Gala ’18 such a special night (visit www.ogsef.org for details)! The night featured fun competition during the live and silent auctions, bottles and bottles of prizes from the Wine Toss, and of course food and dancing! Most importantly, the evening provided an opportunity to come together as a community with the common goal of creating new and differentiated educational opportunities for our kids.
You can view pictures from the event on the Foundation’s Facebook page (@ogsfoundation). Special thanks to Oswaldo Suarez for lending his photography skills and beautifully capturing the evening! Look for an update next week with more details on funds raised, top bid items and more. Thank you again for your support!

Social Emotional Learning
Have you ever "flipped a lid?" In grades kindergarten through fifth grade, we are learning how to manage strong emotions. We are focusing on the parts of our body that feel emotions like our hearts, head, stomach and palms. We are also learning two parts of the brain that can help us manage strong emotions. Our focus is on the amygdala (the feelings/reactor part) and the cortex (the thinking part). Over the next month, we will learn how to calm ourselves down to better manage our emotions and improve our relationships.
This week we practiced saying a STOP word and Naming your feeling. Those first two steps will help our cortex (the thinking part) take control before we "flip a lid!"
Have a great week and the next time you are ready to scream, STOP, NAME YOUR FEELING and calm down! Please check your Classdojo for your child's specific lessons. Have a great week!
