COVID Testing Available at Walden
All of us are working hard to keep Walden as safe from COVID-19 as we can. We are so very grateful for everyone's efforts. Unfortunately COVID-19 is still rampant in our communities. With the emergence of variants and the persistence of positive cases, it has been an uphill battle.
Based on feedback we have received from many parents, one of the problems people are facing is that it feels more difficult to get tested this year. Last year we were able to provide testing like this in school and many of you would like to continue to have that option. To that end we have partnered with Beechtree Laboratories to help for the school year and would like to make their COVID testing services available to students, staff, and families.
We plan on having them here once a week on Fridays for in-school testing of any students and staff who wish to be tested, and they can make their high grade tests available at no out of pocket cost for families at home and emergency use for when an unforeseen event arises. Please sign up if this is a service you think you will want either now or in the future.
For students who are in quarantine: Tomorrow, Friday morning between 8:00-9:00 AM if you have registered and have the right QR code, you can park your car on the shoulder of university avenue right outside the high school someone will come out to your car to administer the test.
ABOUT BEECHTREE
Beechtree is a highly experienced laboratory based locally in Draper UT. They have been testing across the US supporting states, municipalities, airports, schools, hospitals, drive thru sites, the US Military and the movie, oil, sports, and fishing industries – the advantages Beechtree offers us are:
- Very Fast Turn Around. Beechtree is local, based in Draper so they will be able to offer super-fast turnarounds – same day for am testing or overnight for pm testing.
- Best Science. Keep our school safe and kids in school by minimizing false negative and false positives – RT-PCR Test using our 4 Gene Test. You can be confident on the Variants of Concern.
- Simple, Fast and Efficient. Seamless for students with one-time registration and consent. End to End platform which includes QR code Health Pass, individual/parent, school dashboard and state mandated reporting requirements.
- Zero Cost to You. Beechtree are a full-service laboratory with years of experience billing insurance and HRSA for the CARES Act so there is no cost to the parents or students. As required by the CARES Act your Students and Parents won’t get a bill from Beechtree for individual diagnostic testing.
- At Home Test Kit. Should you need a test to be conducted at home prior to the start of term or a sports program or for anyone isolated or quarantined the Beechtree at-home kit is ideal.
recommends a layered approach including regular screen testing and they state, “to be effective, the screening program should test at least once per week, and rapidly (within 24 hours) report results.” High risk sports activities may require twice weekly testing.
REGISTRATION AND CONSENT
Please register your child and provide consent for testing in the Beechtree application by scanning the QR Code. This is a one-time registration and consent for the school year. You can withdraw consent at any time but won’t need to register your child every week. Once registered a QR Code is provided to the child’s phone. If they do not have a device a lanyard Card will be provided.

Policy for Dealing with Communicable Disease at Walden School
Controlling communicable disease in the school setting is of utmost importance.. Providing a safe, comfortable, and healthy environment facilitates the educational process, encourages social development, and allows children to acquire healthy attitudes toward organized settings.
Children who are ill or feel sick can create difficulties in group settings. An ill child often demands more attention from the teacher or caregiver and cannot fully participate in group or educational activities. Worse yet, the child with a communicable disease may spread the illness to others. This is especially concerning for medically fragile children. Accordingly, it is essential that educators and parents control the spread of communicable disease by safe, effective, and practical efforts.
The following are conditions of special concern to us for which children should be kept home as well as minimum requirements for when they should return. When necessary children should be diagnosed and treated by a licensed clinician before returning to school:
Colds/Flu
Children with coughing, sneezing, chills, general body discomfort, fatigue, fever, and discharge from the nose and/or eyes, should be kept home until fever is resolved for 48 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medicine) and any yellow or green drainage is resolved.
COVID-19
Symptoms can be mild-severe and include cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fever, chills, muscle pain, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell. Other less common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
A person testing positive and has symptoms should stay home until:
At least 5 days have passed after symptoms first appeared and they have had no fever for at least 24 hours (that is one full day of no fever without the use of medicine that reduces fevers) such as Acetaminophen (Tylenol), Ibuprofen or Aspirin.
AND other symptoms have improved (for example, when cough or shortness of breath have improved).
They should continue to wear a mask for a full 10 days from their test date.
A person who DID NOT have COVID-19 symptoms, but tested positive may return to school under the following conditions**:
At least 5 days have passed after the date of their first positive test.
AND they continue to have no symptoms (no cough or shortness of breath) since the test.
They should continue to wear a mask for a full 10 days from their test date.
A person who was exposed to COVID but is fully protected with up to date vaccinations or through a confirmed positive case within 90 days of exposure may return to school but should wear a mask for a full 10 days after the exposure. They should also get a COVID test on day 5 after exposure.
A person who was exposed to COVID but is not fully protected may return to school under the following conditions**:
At least 5 days have passed after the date of their most recent exposure.
AND they continue to have no symptoms (no cough or shortness of breath) since the exposure.
They should continue to wear a mask for a full 10 days from their exposure date
They should also get a COVID test on day 5 after their most recent exposure.
**In all cases, follow the guidance of your doctor and the Utah County Health Department.

Persistent Cough
Cough lasting longer than 3-4 days especially if it induces vomiting, passing out or a cough that is productive of colored sputum.
Diarrheal Diseases
An increase in the number of bowel movements compared with the child's normal pattern with watery or unformed stools which may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, headache, and/or fever should be resolved for at least 48 hours before returning to school. If any kind of stool softeners (fleets, enema, laxative, etc.) are administered, please keep students home for at least 24 hours.
Impetigo
Blister-like skin lesions and oozing or crusted sores should be evaluated by a healthcare provider and treated with an antibiotic for at least 24 hours before the child returns to school.
Pink-Eye or Conjunctivitis
Symptoms of conjunctivitis include redness, discharge from eye, matted eyelashes, and burning or itching eyes and should be evaluated by a healthcare provider. The individual must have the symptoms resolved or be treated with a topical antibiotic for at least 24 hours before
returning to school.
Open wounds or sores
Wounds that are open or draining should be kept covered with a dressing.
Vomiting
Nausea with emesis. Must be free of vomiting for 48 hours prior to returning to school or 72 hours if NoroVirus is suspected.
Strep throat or other bacterial infection
Should be treated with an antibiotic for at least 24 hours and fever-free for at least 24 hours.
Temperature over 100.4
Must be afebrile for 48 hours without the use of medicine that reduces fevers before returning to school.
Skin Rash
Presence of any skin rash that might be due to an infection should be evaluated by a healthcare provider or resolved before returning to school
