HAPPY DECEMBER!

The month of November flew by! This past month was a busy month for the staff and students as we came to the end of the 1st marking period and started the 2nd marking period.


We hope that you have had the opportunity to meet with your child's teacher and have a good idea of how your child is doing with their school progress. If you have not been able to schedule a conference, please contact your child's teacher as soon as possible! We would like to meet with all parents.


We hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving holiday! We are now ready to work hard in the month of December.

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER

Wednesday, December 7th: Early Release Day - students dismissed at 1:20


Friday, December 23rd - Monday, January 2nd: Winter Break - no school for students and staff

OUR MONTH AHEAD

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

We will begin Unit 3 - PLANTS AND ANIMALS GROW AND CHANGE. We will focus on the essential question - Why do living things change? Students will read a variety of non-fiction texts about life cycles. They will identify key details and write informational pieces. Students will also read fictional stories about animals and compare the stories to non-fiction texts.

MATH

We will continue Modules 2 throughout the month of December. We will focus on adding and subtracting within 20 and demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. This module also introduces students to the unit ten. Students use the structure of the ten to add within the teens, to add to the teens, and to subtract from the teens.

SOCIAL STUDIES

We will begin Social Studies in late December. We will be focusing on history where we will examine differences between past and present, and compare and contrast things/people from past and present time.

SCIENCE

Students will continue to explore light and sound this month. They will plan and conduct investigations to help them understand how light and sound travel.

Leader In Me

Students will be able to develop a personal mission statement that reflects qualities and goals that matter most to them. They will then be able to practice using their personal mission statements to make good choices for themselves and others. As we move on to Habit 3, Put First Things First, students will be able to develop a list of their priorities and describe Big Rocks. They will be able to describe how their priorities can help them make positive decisions at home and school.

FAMILY TRADITIONS

The first graders will be learning about traditions, and we will discuss what traditions each family has. Check out what traditions our first-grade teachers have! They might be similar to your traditions with your family.

Our family tradition is on Christmas morning. The youngest child passes out all the gifts to everyone. My son is so excited to read all the names on the Christmas presents and hand them out to us and his grandmother. After all the presents are handed out then everyone goes through their Christmas stocking first. I wish you all a happy holiday and a fun New Years!

Mrs. Henderson

One of my favorite family traditions takes place in December. My grandmother had the best sugar cookie recipe. I always look forward to helping her and my mom make them when I was a kid. My favorite part was rolling out the dough! My sister and I are keeping this tradition going with our own children. Before Christmas, we gather at my sister’s house to make the cookies. We enjoy watching our kids make a mess with the flour and sprinkles. And of course the best part is eating them! We look forward to carrying on this tradition for many years!

Our family has lots of December traditions! We bake cookies together and make gingerbread houses. On Christmas Eve we go to church with my Grandma and then have a big family dinner. On Christmas Day we open presents and have lots of food. Our family loves this time of year!

Mrs. Brewbaker

My family has many traditions. We spend holidays together, celebrate birthdays, and watch football every Sunday. One tradition that I especially look forward to during the winter holiday season is decorating our house with snowmen and Christmas decorations while listening to Christmas music and drinking hot chocolate. It is always a lot of fun and a time I cherish with my family!

Ms. Tan

The holiday season is quickly approaching which means family traditions are in full effect! One tradition that Jared and I have is going to Christmas Events around the DMV like the Winter City Lights in Olney and the Baltimore Christmas Village. We also take Stella and Luna to take a picture with Santa! On Christmas Eve, we put on our Christmas pajamas (Stella and Luna also have Christmas jammies on), bake chocolate chip cookies, and watch Elf. I hope you enjoy the holiday season with your friends and families!
