SAISD 504/Dyslexia Newsletter

The SAISD 504/Dyslexia Department oversees compliance with the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) which is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities. The department oversees identification of Section 504 eligible students as well as implementation of 504 Service Plans.

In addition, we seek to evaluate students exhibiting characteristics of Dyslexia and once identified, provide targeted instruction in accordance with the Dyslexia Handbook 2021.

Our ultimate goal is to prepare SAISD students with disabilities for future college and career readiness while assuring access to a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE).

A 504 plan is a blueprint for how the school will support a student with a disability and remove barriers to learning. The goal is to give the student equal access at school.

504 plans are formal plans that schools develop to give kids with disabilities the support they need. That covers any condition that limits daily activities in a major way.

These plans prevent discrimination and protect the rights of kids with disabilities in school. They’re covered under Section 504 Rehabilitation Act. This is a civil rights law.

SAISD is providing Section 504 compliance training via Vector Solutions. All SAISD staff must complete this mandatory training.

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability in reading. Kids with dyslexia have trouble reading accurately and fluently. They may also have trouble with reading comprehension, spelling and writing. The image below from Understood.org can answer many of your basic questions.

Students who exhibit characteristics of dyslexia may have both difficulties with reading and strengths in other areas. While the characteristics listed below are for 2nd -12 grade, they may also be seen in people of all ages.

SAISD is providing three Dyslexia compliance trainings via Vector Solutions.

2. Dyslexia Identification/Assessment - all SAISD teachers and admin
3. Dyslexia Orton-Gillingham Approach/Multisensory- all Inclusion/Resource teachers and DPS; DS Admin
